Jannik Sinner Clinches prestigious Nitto ATP Finals Title with dominant win over Taylor Fritz
Jannik Sinner capped off an extraordinary season with a historic triumph at the Nitto ATP Finals on Sunday. The 23-year-old Italian delivered a commanding performance to defeat Taylor Fritz 6-4, 6-4, becoming the first Italian to win the prestigious tournament in its 55-year history. This victory marked Sinner's first title on home soil and was a fitting conclusion to a year that began with his Australian Open win.
Throughout the match, Sinner displayed the full range of his improved skills, with his serve emerging as a decisive factor. According to Infosys ATP Stats, he won an impressive 83% (33/40) of points behind his first serve, underscoring his dominance in this department.
Sinner’s win placed him in elite company. He joined Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic as the only players to win the Australian Open, US Open, and Nitto ATP Finals in the same season. Moreover, he achieved this feat without dropping a set, becoming the first player to do so since Ivan Lendl in 1986.
In a rematch of both the US Open final and a group-stage encounter earlier in the tournament, Sinner delivered a clinical performance to neutralize Fritz’s game. The Italian’s baseline consistency and ability to dictate rallies with relentless power proved too much for the American, as Sinner secured victory in just 85 minutes.
Cheered on by a 12,500-strong crowd at the Inalpi Arena, Sinner applied pressure early and broke Fritz’s serve in the seventh game of the opening set. After saving three break points, Fritz succumbed on the fourth, as Sinner finished the game with a deft drop shot that brought the crowd to its feet.
Fritz struggled to find rhythm, especially on his forehand, as Sinner restricted him to zero winners from that wing. The Italian’s serve continued to dominate in the second set, where he landed 10 aces from 21 first serves. A decisive break in the fifth game sealed the match, with Fritz unable to create a single break point opportunity throughout.
The victory also marked Sinner’s 50th hard-court win of the season and his 70th overall, reinforcing his position as the World No. 1. With his relentless consistency and exceptional achievements in 2024, Sinner has firmly established himself as one of the game’s brightest stars.
