Croatia earns vital point vs Portugal, Spain beat Switzerland 3-2 in UEFA Nations league latest games

 


Spain ended a brilliant 2024 with a win over Switzerland in a thriller while Croatia advanced to the Nations League quarter-finals after a 1-1 home draw with Portugal on Monday, thanks to Josko Gvardiol's continued scoring form. Despite Portugal having already secured first place in Group A1, Croatia needed the result to edge Scotland by a single point. Scotland had maintained their late momentum with a 2-1 victory over Poland in Warsaw.


Group A1: Croatia Hold On


In Split, Portugal struck first through Joao Felix, who finished a swift counterattack in the 33rd minute. Moments later, Rafael Leao squandered an opportunity to double the lead when clean through on goal.


Scotland’s early goal in Warsaw—courtesy of John McGinn, assisted by teenager Ben Doak—put Croatia under pressure, as they faced elimination. Gvardiol saw a 62nd-minute header disallowed for offside but redeemed himself just three minutes later, arriving unmarked to slot a close-range effort past Jose Sa. This marked his third goal in six Premier League matches for Manchester City.


Meanwhile, in Warsaw, Kamil Piatkowski equalized for Poland with a stunning strike into the top corner. Back in Split, Portugal nearly restored their lead in the 73rd minute, but Croatian goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic denied Nuno Mendes.


Andy Robertson’s injury-time header secured Scotland's second win in four days, but Croatia held on for the draw they needed to progress. Scotland now face a play-off to retain their League A status, while Poland is relegated.


Group A4: Spain Edge Past Switzerland in Thriller


Spain, already qualified for the next stage, secured a dramatic 3-2 victory over last-placed Switzerland in Tenerife. Alvaro Morata earned Spain a penalty just after the half-hour mark, but Yvon Mvogo saved Pedri’s effort. However, Yeremi Pino capitalized on a chaotic rebound to give Spain the lead.


In the second half, Joel Monteiro dazzled with a solo effort to equalize for Switzerland in the 63rd minute. Bryan Gil regained the lead for Spain five minutes later by intercepting in the Swiss box. Yet, Andi Zeqiri equalized again with a late penalty in the 85th minute. Deep into stoppage time, Bryan Zaragoza converted Spain’s second penalty to clinch the win, marking a first international goal for both Bryans.


Group 2: Romania Stay on Top


Romania strengthened their grip on Group 2 with a dominant 4-1 win over Cyprus in Bucharest. They remain two points ahead of Kosovo, who managed a 1-0 victory over Lithuania in Pristina despite being reduced to 10 men for the second half.


These results set the stage for an intense Nations League finale, with high stakes across multiple groups.
