 Jagadhatri Puja, a revered Hindu festival in West Bengal, celebrates the goddess Jagadhatri, regarded as a form of Durga. The word “Jagadhatri” means “the sustainer of the world,” highlighting the goddess’s role as the one who restores balance, courage, and resilience to her devotees. According to Hindu mythology, it is believed that Jagadhatri emerged to defeat evil forces and to calm the fear that had gripped the world. Celebrated in the month of Kartik (October-November), Jagadhatri Puja is both a thanksgiving and an invocation of divine protection and guidance.


The iconography of Jagadhatri closely resembles that of Durga, but there are distinctive elements. She is depicted with four arms, holding a conch shell, discus, bow, and arrow, symbolizing strength and the readiness to protect her devotees. The goddess is often shown seated on a lion, with a majestic and calm demeanor that conveys her compassion, power, and protective nature.


Jagadhatri Puja is celebrated in various parts of West Bengal, with devotees decorating elaborate clay idols of the goddess in their homes and public pandals. These idols are adorned with rich garments and intricate jewelry, surrounded by vibrant flowers and artistic décor. The puja rituals, including chanting mantras, offering flowers, and performing aarti, create a powerful atmosphere of devotion. The celebration culminates with a grand procession, where the idols are immersed in rivers, symbolizing the return of the goddess to her celestial abode.

The city is known for its unique and artistic pandal designs, grand lighting displays, and cultural programs that attract visitors from all over. Chandannagar’s artistic light displays, known for their vibrant colors and intricate designs, have become iconic and are a unique attraction during the festival.


The celebration in Chandannagar also reflects the city’s colonial heritage, as it is believed that Jagadhatri Puja began there during the French rule, blending Bengali cultural traditions with French influences. Devotees, artists, and tourists come to witness the splendor of Jagadhatri Puja in Chandannagar, making it a notable cultural event in the state.
