Brook Pope stand help England to dominate NZ on day 2 of 1st test

Harry Brook scored his seventh Test century and built a glorious 151-run partnership with Ollie Pope for the fifth wicket, steering England to a strong position against New Zealand in the first Test match on Friday. At stumps on Day 2, Brook was unbeaten on 132, while Ben Stokes was batting on 37. The duo has added 97 runs so far for the sixth wicket. England ended the day at 319 for five in their first innings, trailing New Zealand's total of 348 by just 29 runs.

The significance of Brook and Pope's partnership can be gauged by the situation when Brook arrived at the crease, with England struggling at 45 for three. Soon after, the score became 71 for four. From this precarious position, Pope supported Brook effectively, and the pair carried the score to 222 before Pope was dismissed in the final session for a sparkling  77 studded with glorious strokeplay . Pope was sensationally caught at gully by a flying Glenn Phillips who took arguably one of the finest catches ever seen in the history of test cricket . Phillips flew towards his right airbourne to take the one handed catch in the air football goalkeeper style .

England had a shaky start, losing opener Zak Crawley for a duck as he was lbw . Debutant Nathan Smith struck in his second over, dismissing Jacob Bethell (10) and the experienced Joe Root (0), who was playing his 150th Test. Root played on to his stumps . Will O’Rourke then removed Ben Duckett (46), denying him a half-century as the batter was caught in the deep .

New Zealand's fielding, however, left much to be desired, as they dropped Brook four times — on 18, 41, 70, and 112. Brook capitalized on these opportunities, crafting an breathtaking innings with 10 fours and two sixes off 163 balls.

Earlier in the day, New Zealand resumed their first innings at 319 for eight and managed to extend their total to 348, thanks to Glenn Phillips, who remained unbeaten on 58.
