Germany & Netherlands secure QF spots of UEFA nations league with big wins

Germany Crushes Bosnia and Herzegovina 7-0 to Secure Nations League Group A3 Top Spot

Germany delivered a resounding 7-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina on Saturday, with standout performances from Florian Wirtz and Tim Kleindienst, who each netted twice. This emphatic win ensured Germany claimed the top position in Nations League Group A3 with one match remaining. Already qualified for next year’s quarter-finals, Germany now sits comfortably on 13 points, five ahead of second-placed Netherlands, as they gear up for the 2026 World Cup.

Germany will travel to Budapest to face Hungary on Tuesday for their final group match. They wasted no time asserting dominance in Saturday’s game, with Jamal Musiala opening the scoring just 90 seconds in with a superb looping header. The Bayern Munich midfielder’s goal marked his third consecutive match finding the net for both club and country.

The hosts extended their lead in the 23rd minute when Kleindienst converted a rebound from Robert Andrich’s shot for his maiden international goal. Kai Havertz nearly added to the tally twice before finally scoring in the 37th minute after a quick one-two with Wirtz. Shortly after halftime, Wirtz struck again with a brilliantly placed free kick that caught Bosnia’s goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj off guard.

With Bosnia’s defense crumbling, Germany continued their relentless attack. Wirtz added another in the 57th minute with a tap-in at the far post, followed by substitute Leroy Sane’s strike to make it 6-0. The rout was completed in the 79th minute when Kleindienst slid in for his second goal, capping off an utterly dominant performance by the Germans.

Meanwhile , the Netherlands secured their spot in the Nations League quarter-finals with an impressive 4-0 victory over Hungary on Saturday in a winner-takes-all clash. Entering the match level on points, the Oranje rose to the occasion, powered by first-half penalties from Wout Weghorst and Cody Gakpo, followed by goals from Denzel Dumfries and Teun Koopmeiners.

The match at the Johan Cruyff Arena began with a worrying incident in the seventh minute when Hungary’s assistant coach Adam Szalai experienced a medical emergency. Play was halted for about 10 minutes as Szalai received treatment, shielded from view by staff and players. The Hungarian FA later confirmed that the 36-year-old was “conscious” and in stable condition at an Amsterdam hospital.

Once play resumed, the Netherlands gained the upper hand. A handball in the Hungarian box led to Weghorst converting from the penalty spot, giving the hosts an early lead. Hungarian goalkeeper Denes Dibusz was kept busy, denying efforts from Tijjani Reijnders and Donyell Malen. However, in the 11th minute of added time, Gakpo doubled the lead with another penalty after Malen was clipped in the box.

The second half saw the Netherlands continue to dominate. Dumfries extended the lead in the 61st minute with a volley at the far post, and Koopmeiners sealed the win with a header in the 86th minute during his first international appearance since 2022. With this victory, the Netherlands join Germany in advancing from Group A3 to the quarter-finals.
