WPL24 : Lanning , Radha , Jonnasen guides Delhi Capitals to convincing win over Gujarat Giants & top league table
Captain Meg Lanning (55) played a fine knock as Delhi Capitals defeated Gujarat Giants by 25 runs due to the skilful bowling of Jess Jonassen and Radha Yadav. After scoring 163 runs for eight wickets, Delhi restricted Gujarat's innings to 138 runs for eight wickets. This is Delhi's third win in four matches and the team has reached the top of the table. Gujarat team is still waiting for its first win after so many matches.
Lanning played a fine innings of 55 runs in 41 balls with the help of six fours and one six. She got good support from Alice Capsey (27 runs in 17 balls). Player of the Match Jonassen, before doing wonders with the ball, also contributed 11 runs in seven balls with the bat. For Gujarat, Meghna Singh took four wickets for 37 runs. While chasing the target, no batsman except Ashleigh Gardner failed to score big for Gujarat. Gardner contributed a superb fighting 40 runs in 31 balls.
Both the teams entered this match with two changes each. Gujarat included Tarannum Pathan and Veda Krishnamurthy in place of injured Harleen Deol and Sneha Rana, while Delhi rested fast bowlers Marijane Kapp and Minoo Mani and added Annabel Sutherland and fast bowler Titas Sadhu to the squad. While defending the target, Titas bowled the first over a maiden, while in the second over, Shikha Pandey (1 wicket for 28 runs) bowed Laura Wolvardt with a vicious inswinger.
Phoebe Litchfield (15 runs in 10 balls) hit a six and a four against Titas while captain Beth Mooney (12 runs in 14 balls) hit three fours against Shikha. Jonassen, who came to bowl in the fifth over, once again made Delhi dominate the match by dismissing both the batsmen. She trapped Mooney LBW while Lichfield was caught by Sutherland. Radha Yadav took an easy catch of Veda Krishnamurthy on the ball of Arundhati Reddy. However, Radha ended her innings of 12 runs in 12 balls at the hands of Shikha. Ashleigh Gardner kept Gujarat's hopes alive by hitting a six and a four against Arundhati.
After 10 overs the team's score was 72 runs for four wickets. Radha made Katherine Bryce (three runs) LBW in the very next over. Jonassen gave a big blow to Gujarat's hopes by stumping Gardner in the 15th over. Gujarat team could not score runs quickly after this. After being invited to bat first, Shefali Verma once again gave Delhi a fast start by hitting a six and a four against left-arm spinner Tanuja Kanwar. However, her innings did not last long. She was out on the bowling of Meghna Singh after scoring 13 runs in nine balls. Lanning got a lease of life on the score of 30 runs.
Lanning kept the team's score running by making a partnership of 38 runs with Capsey for the second wicket and 47 runs with Jemimah Rodrigues for the third wicket. Capsi hit five fours in his 17-ball innings but Jemima could score only seven runs in 10 balls. Amidst Jemima's slow batting, Lanning hit a six against Bryce. She completed his half-century in 39 balls. She returned to the pavilion after being caught by Dayalan Hemlata on Meghna's ball. After Lanning's dismissal, Delhi's run rate was curbed. The team failed to hit a single four from 15.2 overs to 19.3 overs. Although Gujarat had a chance to restrict Delhi to a lower score, the team dropped many catches due to poor fielding.
