WPL24: Harris slaughters Gujarat Giants as UPW canter to victory
UP Warriors won with Grace Harris's explosive half-century. They got their second win in the Women's Premier League (WPL). They are now third in the points list. On the other hand, Gujarat Giants lost three matches in a row. The first victory is still elusive.
UP won the toss and elected to bowl first in Bengaluru on Friday. Gujarat's batsmen got off to a steady by slow start but none managed to score big runs. Opener Laura Woolvert scored a steady 28 but Mooney (16) failed again and Harleen (18) wasted balls . Phoebe Lichfield (35) and Ashley Gardner (30) scored at a decent run rate in the middle order courtesy of a 52-run partnership. They made 142 after losing 5 wickets in 20 overs and added some respectibilty However, they could not score more runs due to playing many dot balls in the early to middle overs. For UPW Ecclestone claimed 3/20 and bowled very well while Chamari Athapaththu playing her 1st WPL match replacing McGrath bowled tidy lengths with figures of 19 in 4 overs .
In reply, captain Alyssa Healy started in blazing fashion for UP. Scored 33 off 21 balls with 7 fours. Navgire made a quick 13. Then Athapaththu & Harris got together . However after getting the team to 86/2 , Athapaththu was caught near the boundary for 17 off 11 balls with 4 cracking 4s . Sherawat was out cheaply as UPW got into some worries but Harris was in supreme form as she combined power and touch to score with ease
Harris held the innings together .She played a blazing innings of 60 runs off 33 balls with the help of 9 fours and 2 sixes. Deepti Sharma (17 off 14) gave worthy support as UP Warrioz cantered home with 4.3 overs to spare . Harris was the player of the match for her breathtaking performance.
UPW is now in the 3rd spot in points table while Gujarat Giants are still in search for their 1st win . Gujarat nanagement needs to be more proactive and fearless . Their plan of playing 3 run accumulators in the top 3 is hurting them badly. They need a power hitter at the top .
