Pacers dominate as Australia take charge of day 1 of 2nd test vs New Zealand

New Zealand is again under pressure in the second Test against Australia at home at Christchurch.  Australian captain Pat Cummins won the toss and decided to field.  Tim Southee's team could not use the advantage of batting first at home.  The first innings of the hosts ended with 162 runs.  In reply, Australia were 124 for 4 at the end of the first day's play.

Kiwi batters could not stand in front of Australia's bowling attack.  Apart from opener Tom Latham and wicketkeeper-batsman Tom Blundell at number six, none could do much.  Latham scored 38 runs before he was caught behind off Hazlewood.  14 runs came from the bat of the other opener Will Young before Marsh caught him brilliantly off Starc .  Kane Williamson dropped to number three and scored 17 runs before he was lbw to Hazlewood.  The former captain of New Zealand did not get a run in the first innings of the 100th Test.   Rachin Ravindra (4) was caught playing a loose shot off Hazlewood who had Daryl Mitchell (4) caught behind to an unplayable delivery that moved away .  Blundell made 22 before being caught off the glove off Green .  Matt Henry and Southee put up a bit of a fight at the end.  Henry's 29-run innings came from 28 balls.  The New Zealand captain scored 26 off 20 balls in the 100th Test.  In the end, due to their aggressive batting, the hosts saved some face.

New Zealand's batsmen could not take advantage of Australia's strong bowlers on this day.  Jos Hazlewood is Australia's most successful bowler with 5 wickets for 31 runs.  3 wickets for 59 runs by Mitchell Starc.  1 wicket for 35 runs by Cummins.  Cameron Greene took 21 runs and 1 wicket.  In other words, all 10 wickets of New Zealand have been picked up by the visiting team's bowlers.

Australia also came under pressure in the beginning when they came down to bat.  The two openers Smiv Smith and Usman Khwaja got out quickly.  Smith scored 11 runs and then padded up to Ben Sears  and Khwaja scored 16 runs before getting bowled round his legs by Matt Henry .  After 2 wickets fell for 32 runs, the pair of Marnus Labuschagne and Green managed the situation somewhat.  Labuschagne ended the day unbeaten on 45 runs.  Green scored  25 before Henry bowled him .  They scored 49 runs for the third wicket pair.  Travis Head (21) also did not get big runs.  At the end of the day Nathan Lyon (unbeaten 1) is on 22 yards with Labuschagne (45) .

Matt Henry hit the Australian camp with 3 wickets for 39 runs.  1 wicket for 38 runs taken by Ben Sears.  Australia won the first test.  New Zealand must win in Christ Church to save the loss in the two-match series.
