WPL24: Delhi Capitals shock batting collapse helps RCB to lift 1st WPL trophy
Royal Challengers Bangaluru mens team failed to win the IPL despite trying for 16 years. But RCB won the women's IPL (Women's Premier League) which started last year. They beat Delhi Capitals in the final. The womens won the trophy before the mens . Richa Ghosh of Bengal won the match by hitting the winning four.
Delhi batted first on Sunday after winning the toss . With the pace Shefali Verma started with, it looked like there would be a big score for the hosts . Delhi raced to 64 runs in 7 overs as Shafali plindered runs at will by smashing 4s & 6s while Lanning was shrewdly giving her young partner the strike . Sophie Molineux came to bowl in the eighth over for RCB. The game turned in that over. Shefali (44) was out on the first ball caught at deep midwicket . Jemima Rodrigues is out in the third ball and her first trying to sweep early and was castled . Alice Capsey was bowled the fourth ball and her 1st trying a horrendous lap shot exposing her stumps . Molineux put the team in the driver's seat by taking three wickets in one over.
Delhi could not handle that shock. After that they kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Lanning finally was lbw to the impressive Shreyanka Patil for 23 and the rest of the batting simply imploded and could not get many more runs. A lot was expected off Kapp (8) but she too could not rescue Delhi and the rest just fell apart . Delhi were all out for 113 runs. Apart from Sophie, Shreyanka Patil caught the eye. She took 4 wickets alone. Asha Sovana took 2 wickets. There is a run out. RCB captain Smriti Mandhana's smile widened at the half time .
RCB had to fight till the last over despite playing with a small target in mind. Mandhana (31) and Sophie Devine (32) put on a partnership of 49 runs. Both started steadily but Devine started to punish the bad balls specially Radha in one over till she was lbw. Smriti too departed with a catch in the deep . Ellyse Perry (35*) and Richa Ghosh (17*)did not play big shots despite having 8 wickets in hand. They batted carefully and somehow took the match to the last over . RCB needed 5 runs in the last over to win. They won the match with three balls to spare with Richa hitting the final 4
Bengal's Richa caught the eye in this competition. She scored 257 runs in 10 matches. Ellyse Perry scored the most runs in the competition though. She scored 347 runs in 9 matches. Smriti Mandhana scored 300 runs in 10 matches. They are all RCB cricketers. Bangalore won the trophy under their influence. RCB's power is not only with the bat, but also with the ball. Shreyanka took 13 wickets to become the highest wicket taker and that too after missing a couple of games due to injury . The 21-year-old young spinner took 4 wickets in the final and is a future Indian star in the making with the ball .
