Glenn Phillips 5 fer rattle Australia 2nd innings , 369 target for NZ in 1st test

New Zealand bowlers have staged a great fightback on day 3 of the 1st test vs Australia to give their team some hope in the test match . Glenn Phillips led the way with 5 wickets on a pitch where ball is turning and jumping while Matt Henry followed his 1st innings fifer with 3 wickets while skipper Southee took 2 wickets .

Starting the day at 13/2 , Australia was buoyed by an aggressive intent from nightwatchman Nathan Lyon who scored 41 bonus runs with some aggressive strokes while Khawaja was playing a typically solid knock till at 28 he jumped out to Phillips to be stumped .

After Lyon departed Head came out & played a short sharp cameo of 29 before Phillips got him . Marsh was caught at short leg next ball and Carey (3) failed in another test innings.

Green was shaping up well again till he was acrobatically caught at short leg off Phillips for 34  . The lower order did not stay long and Australia was 164 all out giving a 369 target to New Zealand in the 4th innings with over 2 days remaining .

The hosts were rattled again early in the 2nd innings with Latham (8) and Williamson (9) snared by Lyon to close catching and Young (15) snapped up in the slips off Head .

Ravindra played a fluent knock after the fall of 3 wickets as he played some pleasing shots in his unbeaten 56 and accompanied by a stubborn  Mitchell (12) as New Zealand ended day 3 at 111/3 .

With the pitch spinning and balls jumping it will be a tough ask for the hosts to script a sensational win . At this point Australia are well poised to win the first test .
