Aus pull off sensational 2nd test & series win over NZ after heroic knocks from Carey , Marsh & Cummins
Australia has won the 2 test series against New Zealand. After winning the first Test match in Wellington, Australia also won the second Test played in Christchurch by 3 wickets and captured the series. Along with this, Australia's dominance over New Zealand in red ball cricket was seen intact here too. In the earlier in the T20 series also, Australia had defeated the host Kiwis.
In the Christchurch Test, New Zealand had set a target of 279 runs for Australia to win. Achieving this target of victory was not that easy in the fourth innings, which was also felt when at one time Australia lost 5 wickets for just 80 runs as Travis Head (18) was dismissed by Southee early morning after Marsh was dropped previous ball. But, after this Alex Carey anchored the crease along with Marsh. Both played sensibly resprcting the good balls and smashing the poor balls for boundaries . They also kept rotating the strike ahd took calculated risks . Marsh hit a glorious pulled six and looked solid till Bean Sears trapped him lbw for 80 after a brilliant 140 run stand with Carey that set up the base for Australia. However off the next ball Sears had Starc caught at short leg and Australia slumped to 220/7 .
However Pat Cummins once again proved to be the saviour for Australia with yet another resilient knock even as Carey was driving and cutting for occasional boundaries in between strike rotation. Cummins hit a few safe boundaries of his own as the pressure mounted on the Kiwi bowlers . Both completed a brilliant 61 run stand and Cummins hit the winning boundary to stay 32 not out while Carey was stranded at 98 not out but the test and series win was more important for Australia than personal landmarks.
Carey equals Gilchrist's feat
In the year 1999, Adam Gilchrist became the first wicketkeeper batsman who led Australia to victory by scoring more than 90 runs in the fourth innings. Gilchrist had scored unbeaten 149 runs in the fourth innings of that Test played in Hobart. Now Alex Carey has done the similar feat for Australia in the year 2024 in the fourth innings. He led Australia to victory in the Christchurch Test by playing an unbeaten inning of 98 runs.
Before repeating history by playing an unbeaten inning of 98 runs in the Christchurch Test, leading Australia to victory, Alex Carey took a total of 10 catches in the match including both the innings. In this way, he was chosen Player of the Match for scoring a total of 112 runs in the match (14 runs in the first innings, 98* runs in the second innings) and taking 10 catches. The Player of the Series award went to New Zealand bowler Matt Henry, who took 17 wickets.
Since 2000, 27 Tests have been played between Australia and New Zealand, out of which Australia has won 21 while New Zealand has won only 1. Whereas 5 tests have been drawn between the two teams.
New Zealand has also suffered a loss in the Christchurch Test in the points table of the WTC, where it has slipped one place from second to third place. Australia captured second place by defeating New Zealand. India is at number one in the WTC table.
