WPL24: Deepti's heroics fail to prevent loss for UPW vs Gujarat Giants

She continued to fight alone in times of danger for the team. Repeated the same in the match vs Gujarat Giants.  However, the current orange cap holder , Deepti Sharma could not win the match for the  team.  Her team UP Warriors lost to Gujarat Giants by 8 runs in WPL.  But Deepti's innings of 88 runs is bound to be remembered.  Even though she won the team the previous day, she failed this day.  Gujarat won the second match of WPL.

Gujarat won the toss and decided to bat first.  They are off to a good start.  Both the openers continued to play in a mercurial fashion especially Wolvardt.  The most aggressive was Laura Wolvardt.  She returned with 43 off 30 balls.  She hit eight fours and a six.  Beth Mooney played well in this match as in the previous match.  She hit 10 fours and 1 six, the innings of 74 runs from 52 balls came from the bat of the Gujarat captain.

However, the next batters could not show this power.  After that, only two scored double-digit runs. Gardner(15) again failed to get a good score .  Otherwise, Gujarat could have made a bigger score as they made 152 for 8 in 20 overs.  Sophie Ecclestone took 3 wickets and Deepti 2 wickets for UP. However it was the last over of their innings which seemed to spur on Gujarat. Mooney plundered 22 runs in the last over of Ecclestone that took Gujarat score from a below average 130 to a decent 152 .

UP got off to a bad start.  No runs were scored by the early batters.  Alyssa Healy scored 4 runs off 3 balls.  Kiran Navgire and Chamari Atapattu could not open the accounts and 16 year old promising pacer Shabnam Shakeel dismissed Healy and Athapaththu.  Grace Harris scored only 1.  UP lost 4 wickets for 16 runs.  Shweta Sehrabat also returned with 8 runs bowled by Shabnam.  5 wickets fell for 35 runs.

From there, Deepti and Poonam Khemner started fighting.  Increasing pressure on Gujarat's bowlers.  However, the end was not saved as the number of balls was less than the number of runs.  Deepti scored a blistering  unbeaten 88 off 60 balls with the help of 9 fours and 4 sixes.  Poonam remained unbeaten on an impressive 36 off 36 balls.  Deepti's batting was a revelation in this WPL  as she scored 3 fifties and scored  runs a great pace  abd even increasing her range of shots from the sweep to dab past slips and straight hits down the ground with more power and this will augur well when India plays a big international events.

With this loss UPW are virtually out of IPL along with Giants and unless RCB loses very big to Mumbai Indians both teams will be out of the WPL 2024.
