Heavy rains, flash floods in Spain leaves more than 200 dead
Heavy rains & flash floods have created havoc in Spain in past couple of days .
Spain has not experienced such a natural disaster in the past five decades. Although rain is typical in this season, the rainfall this year has been far above normal levels, which European meteorologists are calling unprecedented.
For several days now, Spain has been facing extremely heavy rainfall, leading to flooding across multiple provinces. The southern and western regions of Spain have been particularly affected, suffering extensive damage due to the intensity of the rain. Since yesterday, Friday, the rainfall has increased further in Andalusia and Huelva, prompting renewed heavy rainfall warnings in Huelva. Valencia has been the hardest-hit province, with over 100 soldiers deployed there to help manage the crisis and rescue missing residents. Across the country, more than 2,200 troops have been mobilized for relief efforts.
So far, this natural disaster has claimed 205 lives in Spain, but officials fear the death toll may rise, as many people are believed to be trapped under mud and debris in various provinces. In one video, NGO workers can be seen on the streets with brooms and buckets, working to clear the muddy water.
On Tuesday, Valencia recorded its heaviest rainfall in 28 years. Many basements remain underwater, while roads, rail lines, and vast expanses of farmland have been completely flooded. Numerous cities are without power, and the Spanish emergency services report that recent storms have inundated towns and roads, leaving thousands of people without electricity or drinking water. Many individuals remain missing, although the exact number is still uncertain.
