WPL25 : Sciver , Mathews power MI to big win over Gujarat Giants
In the latest WPL duel Harmanpreet Kaur’s Mumbai Indians defeated Gujarat Giants by five wickets. Batting first, Ashleigh Gardner’s team posted a meagre total of 120 runs. In response, Mumbai chased down the target in 16.1 overs, scoring 122/5. This marked Mumbai’s first win in the tournament.
Harmanpreet won the toss and opted to field first. However, Gujarat’s batters struggled to capitalize on the opportunity to set a competitive total on the Baroda pitch. Their innings crumbled early, losing five wickets for just 43 runs. Beth Mooney (1), Laura Wolvaardt (4), Dayalan Hemalatha (9), Ashleigh Gardner (10), and Deandra Dottin (7) were all dismissed in quick succession. Harleen Deol and Kashvee Gautam then attempted to stabilize the innings. Harleen scored 32 off 31 balls, hitting four boundaries, while Gautam showed some spark & contributed 20 off 15 balls, including two fours and a six off Shabnim Ismail . Towards the end, Tanuja Kanwar (13) and Sayali Satre (unbeaten 13) tried to add some crucial runs. Gujarat’s innings ended with their tenth wicket falling on the final ball.
For Mumbai, Hayley Matthews was the standout bowler, taking 3 wickets for just 16 runs. Amelia Kerr picked up 2 wickets for 22 runs, while Nat Sciver-Brunt also claimed 2 wickets, conceding 26 runs. Shabnim Ismail and Amanjot Kaur chipped in with a wicket each. Shabnim took 1/17 in her 4 economical overs .
Chasing a target of 121, Mumbai Indians faced little difficulty despite losing openers Matthews (17) and Yastika Bhatia (8) early. Captain Harmanpreet Kaur (4) also failed to make an impact at No. 4 being lbw to Gautam . However, Nat Sciver-Brunt played a crucial role, scoring a fluent 57 off 39 balls, including 11 boundaries, which helped stabilize Mumbai’s innings. Amelia Kerr also contributed with 19 runs off 20 balls. In the end, Sajeevan Sajana (unbeaten 10) and G. Kamalini (unbeaten 4) guided Mumbai to victory.
For Gujarat, Kashvee Gautam was the most effective bowler, taking 2 wickets for 15 runs and therefore had a very good match . Priya Mishra also picked up 2 wickets but conceded 40 runs, while Tanuja Kanwar took 1 wicket for 25 runs.
