Richa blasts 27 ball 64 to script a record run chase as RCB beat Gujarat Giants in 1st game of WPL25

The Women's Premier League (WPL) 2025 got off to a thrilling start with an explosive opening match between Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Gujarat Giants. The game was filled with boundaries and sixes, but it was RCB who emerged victorious. They created history by successfully chasing the highest total in WPL history. Chasing a mammoth target of 202 runs, Ellyse Perry, Richa Ghosh, and Kanika Ahuja played crucial roles in leading RCB to victory with nine balls to spare. Notably, no team had ever chased such a big total in the previous two seasons of WPL.

Ellyse Perry’s Counter-Attack Turned the Game

RCB captain Smriti Mandhana won the toss on Friday, February 14, and opted to field first against Gujarat Giants. However, Gujarat, led by Ashleigh Gardner, posted a massive 201-run total with a blistering innings from their captain. At one point, it seemed like Mandhana’s decision to bowl first might backfire, especially after RCB lost both openers for just 14 runs.

However, the real action began when Ellyse Perry walked in to bat. Despite early pressure, Perry launched a counter-attack, forming a crucial 86-run partnership in just 54 balls with Raghavi Bist. Unfortunately, in the 11th over, Raghavi was dismissed after scoring 25 runs off 27 balls. Two overs later, Perry also departed, but not before smashing 57 runs off 34 balls at a strike rate of 167, keeping RCB’s hopes alive.

Richa Ghosh and Kanika Ahuja Seal the Victory

After Perry’s dismissal, RCB found themselves in a tricky situation, needing 93 runs off just 46 balls. However, Richa Ghosh stepped up and carried forward Perry’s momentum with an aggressive display of power-hitting. She hammered 64 runs off just 27 balls* at a strike rate of 237, including 4 sixes and 7 fours, completely dismantling Gujarat’s bowling attack.

Meanwhile, Kanika Ahuja provided valuable support, scoring 30 runs off just 13 balls. Their explosive partnership ensured that RCB made history by successfully chasing the highest total in WPL history. For her match-winning knock, Richa Ghosh was awarded the Player of the Match.

Earlier  Gujarat Giants batting first lost Wolvaardt & Hemlata cheaply but Beth Mooney played a stellar innings of 56 to lay a strong foundation after which skipper Ashley Gardner (79*) blasted a sensation innings in just 37 balls with 8 mighty sixes . It was a breathtaking strokeplay by Gardner with good support from Dottin (25) who played a quickfire cameo helping Gujarat to reach a formidable 200 plus score in 20 overs .

RCB’s incredible chase in the WPL 2025 opener has set the tone for an exciting season ahead.
