WPL25 : Gardner , bowlers combine as Gujarat Giants outclass RCB

Three matches ago, Royal Challengers Bangalore were at the top of the points table, and it seemed like Smriti Mandhana’s team was on course to win the Women’s IPL for the second consecutive time. However, things took a turn when they played at home. RCB are yet to win a match at their home ground this season, suffering three consecutive defeats. On Thursday, Gujarat Giants handed them a six-wicket loss.

In their previous match, Bangalore had suffered a heartbreaking defeat against UP Warriorz despite being in a winning position. Against Gujarat, they struggled from the beginning. Gujarat captain Ashleigh Gardner won the toss and opted to bowl first—a decision that was justified by her bowlers’ performance.

RCB’s top order faltered in this match. Smriti Mandhana (10), Danielle Wyatt-Hodge (4), and Ellyse Perry—who had scored 90 in the last match—were all dismissed cheaply, with Perry failing to open her account. Kanika Ahuja partnered with Raghvi Bist to stabilize the innings, adding 48 runs. However, their scoring rate remained slow. Raghvi scored 22, while Kanika managed 33 before getting out, putting Bangalore under pressure once again.

Bengal’s Richa Ghosh (8) also failed to make an impact being clean bowled by the highly impressive Kashvee Gautam . It was only due to Georgia Wareham’s late contribution of 20 runs that RCB managed to cross the 100-run mark, finishing at 125 for 7 in 20 overs.

For Gujarat Giants, Kashvee Gautam with 1/17 in 4 overs was very difficult to score off with her skillful variations . Dottin & Kanwar took 2 wickets each in impressive shows .

Chasing 126, Gujarat took only 16.3 overs to secure victory. Despite Beth Mooney (17) and Harleen Deol (5) failing to score big, their team faced no major hurdles. Captain Gardner played a breathtaking match-winning knock of 58 off 31 balls with 3 sixes , & well supported by Phoebe Litchfield, who added  a sparkling  30 runs in a mere 21 balls .

With this six-wicket win, Gujarat has made the Women’s IPL even more competitive. Mumbai Indians currently lead the points table with six points from four matches, followed by Delhi Capitals with six points from five games. RCB, UP Warriorz, and Gujarat occupy the third, fourth, and fifth spots, respectively—each with four points from five matches. With the top three teams advancing to the playoffs and eight league matches still remaining, the race is wide open. It remains to be seen which three teams will make it to the playoffs in the coming matches.
