New Zealand Crushes Pakistan in Tri-Series Final Ahead of Champions Trophy
Just five days before hosting the Champions Trophy, Pakistan suffered a crushing defeat on home soil. In the final of the ODI Tri-Series, New Zealand completely outplayed them, securing the title with a convincing five-wicket victory. The match took place on Friday, February 14, in Karachi, where Pakistan batted first and set a target of 243 runs. New Zealand comfortably chased it down with 28 balls to spare.
The star performer of the match was William O’Rourke, whose exceptional bowling earned him the Player of the Match award. He took four wickets for 43 runs in 9.3 overs, dismantling Pakistan’s batting lineup.
New Zealand’s Commanding Chase
Pakistan failed to post a big total in the final, but their bowlers initially made scoring difficult for New Zealand. In the second over itself, they dismissed opener Will Young, giving Pakistan some early hope. However, Kane Williamson and Devon Conway showed great patience, gradually building a solid second-wicket partnership of 71 runs.
In the 18th over, Williamson was dismissed for 34 by Salman Agha, and at 108 runs, Conway also departed after scoring 48. At this stage, Daryl Mitchell and Tom Latham took control, stitching an 87-run stand for the fourth wicket, which put New Zealand firmly in the driver’s seat.
Mitchell played a crucial knock of 57 runs off 58 balls, while Latham scored 56 runs off 64 balls before getting out at 232. In the end, Glenn Phillips and Michael Bracewell easily finished the chase, securing the victory for New Zealand.
Pakistan Looked Helpless in the Final
Pakistan struggled in both batting and bowling, with New Zealand dominating throughout the match. Their batting lineup crumbled early, losing three wickets for just 54 runs. Star batter Babar Azam flattered to deceive again dismissed for 29. Fakkar Zaman was out cheaply for 10. Though Mohammad Rizwan and Salman Agha put up some resistance with an 88-run partnership, Pakistan failed to capitalize on it. Rizwan was dismissed for 42 at 142 while Aga made 45 . The rest of the batting lineup could only add 100 more runs.
The bowling performance was equally unimpressive. After the first 10 overs, Pakistan's bowlers failed to trouble New Zealand’s batsmen, allowing them to take full control and comfortably seal the victory.
