WPL 25: Jess Jonassen skillful knock Propels Delhi Capitals to the Top as Gujarat loses again

Delhi Capitals Women stormed to the top of the WPL points table after a dominant victory against Gujarat Giants. Powered by blazing innings from Shefali Verma and Jess Jonassen, Delhi secured a six-wicket win, marking their third triumph in the tournament. They chased down the target with 29 balls to spare, taking their tally to six points.

The match took place at Bengaluru’s Chinnaswamy Stadium, where Delhi’s Australian captain, Meg Lanning, won the toss and opted to field first. Her decision paid off as Delhi’s bowlers restricted Gujarat Giants to 127/9 in 20 overs.

Gujarat’s situation could have been worse had Indian batter Poonam Fulemalhi not scored a crucial 40-run knock at No. 8. Deandra Dottin contributed 26 runs, while Delhi's bowling attack shone with Shikha Pandey, Marizanne Kapp, and Annabel Sutherland each taking two wickets.

Chasing 128, Delhi Capitals made light work of the target, reaching 131/4 in just 15.1 overs. Jess Jonassen led the charge with a blistering 61 off 32 balls, smashing nine fours and two sixes. Shefali Verma complemented her with a rapid 44 off 27 deliveries, hitting five fours and three sixes.

With this victory, Delhi Capitals have won three out of their five matches, accumulating six points. Royal Challengers Bangalore, Mumbai Indians Women, and UP Warriorz each have four points, while Gujarat Giants languish at the bottom with just one win in four games.
