Yoga : Simhasana (Lion Pose) -how to perform

Simhasana, or Lion Pose, is a unique yogic posture known for its facial expression resembling a roaring lion. It is a simple yet powerful asana that helps release tension, improve breathing, and stimulate the throat chakra.

How to Perform Simhasana

  1. Starting Position – Sit in Vajrasana (kneeling position) or cross-legged on the floor. Spread your knees slightly apart.
  2. Hand Placement – Place your palms on your knees, fingers spread wide.
  3. Spinal Alignment – Keep your back straight and chest open.
  4. Facial Expression – Inhale deeply through the nose. As you exhale, open your mouth wide, stick out your tongue as far as possible, and stretch it downward.
  5. Roaring Sound – Exhale forcefully while making a "ha" sound, like a roaring lion. Focus on engaging the throat muscles.
  6. Eye Gaze – Look up between your eyebrows (Shambhavi Mudra) or focus on the tip of your nose.
  7. Hold & Repeat – Maintain the pose for a few seconds, then relax. Repeat 3-4 times.

Benefits of Simhasana

  • Relieves Stress & Tension – Releases facial and jaw tension, reducing anxiety.
  • Improves Throat Health – Strengthens the vocal cords and helps prevent throat infections.
  • Enhances Breathing – Opens up the respiratory tract, aiding in better airflow.
  • Boosts Facial Muscles – Tones facial muscles, preventing wrinkles.
  • Stimulates Digestion – Activates the abdominal muscles and digestive organs.
  • Clears Energy Blockages – Activates the throat chakra (Vishuddha), improving self-expression.

Precautions & Contraindications

  • Throat Sensitivity – Avoid if you have throat infections or severe vocal cord issues.
  • Facial or Jaw Injuries – Not recommended for those with TMJ disorders or recent facial injuries.
  • Respiratory Conditions – Consult a doctor if you have asthma or chronic respiratory problems.
  • Pregnancy & Post-Surgery – Pregnant women and those recovering from surgery should perform with caution.

Regular practice of Simhasana can bring confidence, relaxation, and vitality, making it a valuable addition to any yoga routine.
