WPL25: The Kaurs power MI to an exciting win over RCB in a last over thriller
The Women's Premier League (WPL) match between Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore took place on 21 February & it was a last over thriller . Batting first, RCB posted 167/7. In response, Mumbai Indians chased down the target, scoring 170/6 in 19.5 overs, securing their second win of the season.
RCB had a quick but a shaky start, losing early wickets and finding themselves at 57/4. Skipper Smriti Mandhana started in whirlwind fashion with a 13 ball 26 before Shabnim Ismail dismissed her off a short ball & RCB lost few more wickets thereafter . However, Ellyse Perry rescued the innings with a magnificent knock of 81 runs off 43 balls, hitting 11 sublime fours and 2 sixes. Richa Ghosh (28) also contributed valuable runs. Medium pacer Amanjot Kaur was Mumbai’s most successful bowler, taking 3 wickets for just 22 runs.
Chasing 168, Mumbai Indians also had a rough start, losing Yastika Bhatia (8) early. Nat Sciver-Brunt (42 off 21) counter-attacked and stabilized the innings alongside opener Hayley Matthews (15). Their 57-run stand took Mumbai to 66/1 in the powerplay as Nat was playing a sublime & an effortless innings while Mumbai raced towards the target
RCB soon fought back as Kim Garth bowled the rampaging Sciver & Amelia Kerr (2) was out cheaply to leave MI at 82/4 . However, Mumbai Indians led by captain Harmanpreet Kaur (50) and Amanjot Kaur (34 runs, 3 wickets), turned the game around with a thrilling 62 run stand . Harman played a delightful knock and it looked like securing an easy win over Royal Challengers Bangalore Women. However Wareham got Harman out and got Sajana (0) in the next ball to get RCB back again .
Harmanpreet smashed 8 fours and 1 six in her knock.
However Amanjot Kaur who hit 2 4s & 2 sixes batted gallantly and in the company of a young Kamalini (11*) carried MI to a thrilling win with just one ball to spare. With this victory, Mumbai Indians climbed to second place on the WPL points table, while RCB Women, despite the loss, retained their top spot.
Amanjot for her brilliant all round show was the player of the match .
