WPL25: Overseas stars power Capitals to their 1st win this season as UPW loses again

In a thrilling contest in the Women’s Premier League, UP Warriorz suffered a close defeat against Delhi Capitals. Batting first, the Warriorz posted 166/7. In response, Delhi chased down the target, scoring 167/3 with one ball to spare. This marked Meg Lanning’s team’s second victory, while UP Warriorz faced their second consecutive loss.

Delhi captain Lanning won the toss and opted to field first. UP Warriorz took advantage of the opportunity and put up a competitive total. Opener Kiran Navgire played an explosive knock of 51 off 27 balls, hitting six fours and three sixes. Her opening partner, Dinesh Vrinda, contributed 16 runs off 15 balls. However, the dismissals of captain Deepti Sharma (7) and Tahlia McGrath (1) put the team under pressure. Sweta Sehrawat stabilized the innings at No. 5, scoring 37 off 33 balls with four fours and a six. While Grace Harris (12) couldn’t make a big impact, Chinelle Henry played a crucial unbeaten knock of 33 off 15 balls, hitting three fours and three sixes to boost the total.

For Delhi, Annabel Sutherland was the most successful bowler, taking 2 wickets for 26 runs. Minnu Mani (1/16), Jess Jonassen (1/21), and Arundhati Reddy (1/26) also contributed with key breakthroughs.

Chasing 167, Delhi Capitals found themselves under pressure at times. However, a determined effort from Sutherland and Marizanne Kapp guided them to a nail-biting win with one ball remaining. Sutherland remained unbeaten on 41 off 35 balls, while Kapp scored an unbeaten 22 off 17 balls. Both batters hit four boundaries each and kept their composure under pressure.

Earlier, Delhi’s openers provided a solid start. Shafali Verma scored 26 off 16 balls, including three fours and a six. Captain Meg Lanning played a commanding knock, smashing 69 off 49 balls with 12 boundaries. However, Jemimah Rodrigues failed to make an impact.

For UP Warriorz, Grace Harris took 1/11, Deepti Sharma claimed 1/27, and Sophie Ecclestone picked up 1/31. Despite their efforts, Delhi Capitals clinched a thrilling victory.
