Sri Lanka thrash Aussies in 2nd ODI to sweep series 2-0 banking on Kusal Mendis ton
The Australian team suffered a humiliating defeat ahead of the Champions Trophy, as Sri Lanka crushed them in the Colombo ODI. Batting first, Sri Lanka set a target of 282 runs, which proved to be a mountain too high for the Australian side. The Australian batting lineup completely collapsed, and the entire team was bowled out for just 107 runs. With this emphatic victory by 174 runs, Sri Lanka registered a historic win. Notably, this is Australia's biggest defeat against any Asian team in terms of runs. Furthermore, Australia suffered a clean sweep, losing the ODI series 2-0. This marks the first time in 43 years that Australia has been whitewashed by Sri Lanka in an ODI series—the last instance being in 1982.
Australia’s batting lineup failed for the second consecutive time in this ODI series. In the first match, the Kangaroos struggled to chase a modest target of 215 and were bowled out for just 165 runs. A similar story unfolded in the second game as well. Chasing 282, Australia lost early wickets, with their first dismissal of Short (2) coming in the third over. They suffered further setbacks with Head (18) & McGurk(9) exiting within the first seven overs, which put them under immense pressure.
Skipper Steve Smith (29) and Josh Inglis (22) tried to stabilize the innings with a 46-run partnership. However, in the 15th over, with the team at 79 runs, Inglis was dismissed, triggering a collapse. Within the next three overs, Aaron Hardy, Glenn Maxwell, and Steve Smith also fell, reducing Australia to 83/7. Maxwell on his return to the side scored only 1 . The lower order failed to resist, and the entire team folded for 107 runs.
Sri Lanka’s resounding victory was largely due to the brilliance of Kusal Mendis, who played a phenomenal innings. After an early wicket, Mendis built a solid 98-run partnership for the second wicket. Later, he added 94 runs with skipper Charith Asalanka (a brilliant 78 on 66 balls) for the fifth wicket. Mendis scored a superb 101 off 115 balls, playing a crucial role in Sri Lanka reaching a total of 281 runs. His outstanding performance earned him the Player of the Match award.
On the bowling front, Asitha Fernando, Dunith Wellalage, and Wanindu Hasaranga dismantled the Australian batting lineup. Asitha struck early, dismissing the top-order batsmen, while Wellalage and Hasaranga ran through the middle and lower order. Asitha and Hasaranga picked up three wickets each, while Wellalage bagged four, sealing a dominant win for Sri Lanka.
Sri Lankan skipper Charith Asalanka for his scores of 127 & 78 was the player of the series .
