Kuhnemann, Lyon dents Sri Lanka 2nd innings as Australia are poised for 2-0 series win

Australia delivered a stellar performance on the third day of the second Test on Saturday, reducing Sri Lanka to 211 for eight in their second innings by stumps. As a result, the hosts managed only a modest lead of 54 runs. The visitors will aim to wrap up Sri Lanka’s innings quickly on the fourth morning and chase down the target to secure a 2-0 series victory. Australia had posted a first-innings total of 414 runs.

At one stage, Sri Lanka was struggling at 81 for four, appearing set for another crushing innings defeat within three days. However, Angelo Mathews provided some resistance, scoring 76 runs to register his first half-century of the series. He built a 48-run partnership with Dhananjaya de Silva and added 70 runs with Kusal Mendis.

Hopes were high for Mathews to remain at the crease until stumps, but just before the close of play, his resistance ended. Attempting a sweep against Nathan Lyon, he was caught brilliantly at fine leg by Beau Webster. Australia maintained the pressure and claimed two more wickets before stumps.

Left-arm spinner Matthew Kuhnemann was the most effective bowler, taking four wickets in the innings, bringing his match tally to seven. He was well supported by Nathan Lyon, who picked up three wickets. The 37-year-old Lyon reached a significant milestone by dismissing Dinesh Chandimal after lunch, becoming only the third Australian bowler to claim 550 Test wickets. He joined the elite company of Shane Warne (708) and Glenn McGrath (563).

Former Sri Lanka captain Dimuth Karunaratne, playing his final Test, received a standing ovation when he was dismissed in the 13th over. Sri Lanka had suffered a crushing defeat in the first Test, losing by an innings and 242 runs—their worst loss in Test cricket history.
