Kane Williamson’s explosive century and Devon Conway’s brilliant 97-run innings propelled New Zealand to a commanding six-wicket win over South Africa in the ODI tri-series. This victory marked New Zealand’s second consecutive win in the series, securing their place in the final. The Kiwi duo overshadowed Matthew Breetzke’s record-breaking debut innings, which saw him set a new world record for the highest score by a debutant in ODIs. The 26-year-old South African opener rewrote history by breaking a 27-year-old record. Additionally, this chase became New Zealand’s highest-ever successful run chase against South Africa in ODIs. Pakistan is the third team in the tournament.

At Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium, South Africa batted first and posted a formidable total of 304/6, thanks to debutant Matthew Breetzke’s phenomenal 150-run innings. With this knock, Breetzke surpassed Desmond Haynes’ long-standing record of 148 runs on ODI debut, set against Australia in 1978. Breetzke played a breathtaking  knock full of spectacular strokeplay . This innings may help him to be in the starting XI for the Champions Trophy .  Supporting him, Wiaan Mulder contributed 64 runs off 60 balls, while Jamie Smith added 41 runs to the total. For New Zealand, Matt Henry and William O’Rourke claimed two wickets each, while Michael Bracewell picked up one.

Chasing 305, New Zealand achieved victory in 48.4 overs, scoring 308/4. Kane Williamson, returning to ODI form, smashed a century after five years, reaching the milestone in just 72 balls. Devon Conway, replacing Rachin Ravindra in the lineup, played a crucial role with his composed 97 off 107 balls. The duo shared a century partnership, steering New Zealand to a remarkable win. Williamson’s 113-ball innings featured 13 boundaries and two sixes, while Conway struck nine fours and a six. For South Africa, Senuran Muthusamy claimed two wickets, with Dala and Bosch taking one each.

Williamson was named Player of the Match for his outstanding knock. Under Mitchell Santner’s leadership, New Zealand has now secured a place in the tri-series final, where they will face either Pakistan or South Africa. Both teams have suffered a loss in their opening matches. With victories over both the hosts, Pakistan, and South Africa, New Zealand has booked their spot in the grand finale.
