Lyon , Kuhnemann wrecks Sri Lanka again as Aussies win 1st test by innings
Australia completely dominated Sri Lanka in Galle, securing a massive victory by an innings and 242 runs in the first Test. This win marks Australia's biggest victory on Sri Lankan soil, handing the hosts their worst-ever Test defeat at home. With this triumph, Australia takes a 1-0 lead in the two-match Test series.
With Pat Cummins unavailable, Steve Smith led the Australian side. Batting first, Australia declared their innings at 654/6, thanks to outstanding performances from Usman Khawaja, Steve Smith, and Josh Inglis. Khawaja played a brilliant knock of 232 runs. While he struggled for runs in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, he found success away from home.
Smith needed just one run to reach the milestone of 10,000 Test runs, and he achieved it in style with a century, scoring 141 runs in the first innings. Debutant Josh Inglis also made history, scoring a century on his Test debut with a quickfire 102 off 94 balls.
After the batters set up a massive total, Australia's spinners took center stage on the spin-friendly Sri Lankan pitch. Alongside Nathan Lyon, Australia included Matthew Kuhnemann and Todd Murphy, with Mitchell Starc as the only pacer in the squad. In Sri Lanka’s first innings, Kuhnemann picked up five wickets, while Lyon took three. Sri Lanka was bowled out for just 165 runs.
Australia enforced the follow-on, and although Sri Lanka showed some improvement in their second innings, they couldn't avoid defeat. The Australian spinners continued their dominance, preventing any Sri Lankan batter from making a big score. Wickets kept falling at regular intervals, and Sri Lanka was eventually bowled out for 247 runs. All tge Sri Lankan middle order batters got starts in the second innings . Chandimal (31) , Mathews (41) , Kamindu Mendis (a quick 32) , skipper Dhananjaya DSilva (39) & Kusal Mendis ( 34) all got starts but could not carry on . Leg spinnr Vandersay top scored with a belligerent 53 but that only delayed the inevitable. For the tourists Kuhnemann and Lyon took four wickets each, Murphy claimed one, while Starc took the remaining three.
In total, Australia's three spinners accounted for 17 wickets in the match, leading them to a record-breaking victory over Sri Lanka.
