WPL25: MI lose to DC in a final over thriller, Shikha , Shefali , Nikki shines

The Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2025 witnessed a thrilling encounter between Delhi Capitals and Mumbai Indians. In a nail-biting match held in Vadodara, Delhi secured a dramatic victory by 2 wickets, with Arundhati Reddy playing a crucial role. Although she scored just 2 runs, her decisive shot snatched victory away from Mumbai. MI, led by captain Harmanpreet Kaur, had set a target of 165 runs while batting first. Delhi successfully chased it down on the final delivery of the match.

While chasing 165, Delhi got off to a good start, but the team stumbled during the middle overs. However, Niki Prasad’s 35 off 33 balls and Sarah Bryce’s quickfire 21 off 10 balls brought Delhi back into the game. Though Sarah was dismissed in between, their 31-run partnership ensured the match went down to the last over. With 10 runs needed in the final over and three wickets in hand, Niki was on strike. She smashed a four on the first ball, followed by two runs on the second and a single on the third, collecting 7 runs in three balls.

Radha Yadav then took a single, putting Delhi in a strong position, needing just 2 runs off 2 balls. Niki Prasad regained strike, but she was dismissed on the fifth ball, leaving Delhi requiring 2 runs off the last delivery. Fast bowler Arundhati Reddy stepped up under pressure, lofted a shot towards the cover region, and sprinted for two runs, sealing a thrilling victory for Delhi. Notably, this was only the second successful last-ball chase in WPL history, the first being Mumbai’s win over Delhi in a previous season.

Key Contributions

Apart from Niki Prasad and Sarah Bryce, Shefali Verma, Annabel Sutherland, and Shikha Pandey also played crucial roles in Delhi’s victory. Shefali provided an explosive start with a quick 43 off just 18 balls.

Earlier , in the first innings, put in to bat Mumbai Indians lost both their openers Yastika (11) & Mathews (0) cheaply but Nat SciverBrunt & Harmanpreet Kaur put on a classic batting display . Harmanpreet scored a breathtaking 42 in 22 balls with 4 fours & 3 towering sixes . Her strokeplay was spectacular to watch . Sciver played sublime shots as she held the innings together with 80 not out off 59 balls with 13 sizzling 4s . After Harman departed the innings fell apart . Amelia Kerr (9) was unluckily run out and the lower order batters showed little game sense and lost wickets with casual batting this depriving Nat Sciver of a steady partner towards the backend . After last batter Ishaque threw her wicket with an extravagant shot, still 5 balls were left to play in the Mumbai innings .

For DC , Sutherland and Shikha helped restrict Mumbai from posting a bigger total. Shikha delivered an exceptional spell, conceding just 14 runs in 4 overs while taking 2 wickets. Sutherland also made an impact, claiming 3 wickets for 34 runs in 3.1 overs.
