Aussie bowlers dominated Sri Lanka on day one of 1st test despite good knocks from Chandimal, Kusal Mendis
The second Test between Sri Lanka and Australia is underway in Galle. After a dominant win in the first Test, Australia is aiming for a clean sweep. For Sri Lanka, this match is crucial—not just to level the series but also to restore pride. Although this series is part of the World Test Championship (WTC), the result will not impact the WTC final, as Australia and South Africa have already secured their spots.
Sri Lanka’s Strong Start Fades as Australia Strikes Back
Sri Lanka won the toss and opted to bat first. The hosts started well, reaching 87/1 by lunch. However, Australia turned the game around in the second session, taking four wickets to leave Sri Lanka struggling at 144/5 by the tea break.
The visitors continued their dominance in the final session, claiming four more wickets. By the end of the day's play, Sri Lanka was left reeling at 229/9.
Chandimal and Mendis Lead Resistance, Starc and Lyon Shine for Australia
Dinesh Chandimal was Sri Lanka’s top scorer with 74 runs that included several sparkling shots , while Kusal Mendis remained unbeaten on a fine 59. Dimuth Karunaratne, playing his 100th and final Test, contributed 36 runs before Lyon bowled him .
For Australia, Mitchell Starc and Nathan Lyon were the standout bowlers, taking three wickets each. Matthew Kuhnemann picked up two, while Travis Head claimed the prize scalp of Kamindu Mendis . With just one wicket remaining, Australia will look to wrap up Sri Lanka’s innings quickly on Day Two.
