WPL25: Nat Sciver all round show helps Mumbai Indians to outplay UPW & top points table

A stellar all-round performance by Nat Sciver-Brunt and Hayley Matthews powered Mumbai Indians to a commanding eight-wicket win over UP Warriorz in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2025. Sciver-Brunt played a key role with both bat and ball, taking three wickets for just 18 runs as Mumbai restricted UP Warriorz to 142/9 after electing to field first. She then delivered a match-winning knock, scoring a glorious unbeaten 75 off 44 balls, laced with 13 boundaries.

Sciver-Brunt was well-supported by Matthews, who contributed 59 runs off 50 balls. The duo forged a 133-run partnership for the second wicket off 82 deliveries, ensuring Mumbai chased down the target comfortably in just 17 overs.

With this victory, Mumbai Indians now lead the points table with six points, marking their third consecutive win in the tournament. Meanwhile, UP Warriorz remain in fourth place.

Mumbai’s chase began with an early setback as Yastika Bhatia fell to Deepti Sharma after playing seven dot balls. However, Matthews and Sciver-Brunt steadied the innings. Matthews had an early reprieve when Sophie Ecclestone dropped a catch, and she capitalized on it, attacking Saima Thakor with three consecutive boundaries. She later took 13 runs off a Chinelle Henry over and smashed Grace Harris for two fours and a six in a single over.

Earlier, despite a quickfire 45 off 26 balls from Grace Harris, UP Warriorz failed to build on their start. Harris smashed six fours and two sixes, forging a crucial 79-run stand with Vrinda Dinesh (33) for the second wicket. However, a dramatic collapse saw UP lose four wickets for just 12 runs, derailing their innings.

For Mumbai, Sciver-Brunt (3/18) led the bowling attack, while leg-spinner Sanskruti Gupta (2/11) and pacer Shabnim Ismail (2/23) also made significant contributions. UP Warriorz had a promising start, reaching 62/1 in the powerplay, but Amelia Kerr's crucial breakthrough in the 10th over dismissed Harris, triggering their downfall.

Vrinda Dinesh showed resilience, hitting Sciver-Brunt for two boundaries and Ismail for a six. However, Mumbai’s bowlers maintained their stranglehold. Gupta struck twice in consecutive deliveries, dismissing Vrinda and Tahlia McGrath, while Matthews removed Deepti Sharma. Sciver-Brunt later returned to clean up the lower order, dismissing Shweta Sehrawat (19) and Chinelle Henry (7).

Mumbai’s comprehensive victory strengthens their position at the top, making them strong contenders in WPL 2025.
