Story of a beach dog who is an expert in footvolley in Rio de Janerio beaches

 

Animals often capture our attention with their playful and surprising behaviors, and one dog from Brazil has recently stood out in a remarkable way. Meet Floki, a 3-year-old Border Collie who has gained significant fame for his extraordinary footvolley skills.

Footvolley, a sport that combines elements of football and beach volleyball, is challenging even for seasoned athletes. The rules are similar to beach volleyball, but with a slightly lower net, and like in football, players cannot use their hands or arms. Despite these challenges, Floki has mastered the game, impressing beachgoers and online fans with his quick reflexes and precise movements.

Floki’s owner, Gustavo Rodrigues, a footvolley coach, initially planned to adopt an American Bully because of its calm demeanor. However, when Floki, a lively Border Collie, came into his life, Rodrigues quickly noticed his potential. Even at just two months old, Floki displayed impressive agility, chasing and jumping after birthday balloons.

Rodrigues soon introduced Floki to "altinha," a game where players in a circle keep a soccer ball in the air using only their feet and heads. This helped lay the foundation for Floki’s future in footvolley, a sport that some Brazilian footballers take up after retiring. By 2023, Floki made his debut, showcasing his impressive abilities. The game demands agility, coordination, timing, and finesse, as players move swiftly across soft sand under the hot sun. Floki quickly adapted, proving his natural talent for the sport.

"He does things even some professionals find difficult, like positioning himself on the court. When the ball moves from one side to the other, he instinctively adjusts, always facing the ball to make the perfect hit," Rodrigues shared.

During breaks, Floki remains engaged, watching matches from the shade of a nearby bar. When it’s his turn to play, he eagerly barks for the ball and amazes the crowd by scoring points, often sneaking the ball over the net and leaping into Rodrigues' arms to celebrate.

"Watching him on social media, we thought it was just edited highlights of the best moments. But when we saw him play in person, he performed consistently well the whole time—it was really impressive," said Luiza Chioli, a fan who traveled from São Paulo to Rio de Janeiro to watch Floki in action.

As Floki’s fame grows, so do opportunities for sponsorships and endorsements. Although based in Brasília, Rodrigues and Floki frequently travel to Rio de Janeiro—the heart of footvolley—and other parts of Brazil. These trips not only highlight Floki’s incredible skills but also help them create promotional content and expand their social media presence.
