India complete huge win over Bangladesh in 1st test with a new landmark achieved, leads WTC points table
On the fourth day of the first Test match, Bangladesh's resistance crumbled before the lunch break. Despite Najmul Hossain Shanto and Shakib Al Hasan cautiously batting through the first hour of the morning, it was to no avail. After the drinks break, Ravichandran Ashwin dismissed Shakib, triggering the collapse of Bangladesh’s second innings. Ashwin was ably supported by Ravindra Jadeja from the other end. Chasing a target of 515 runs, Bangladesh was bowled out for 234, handing India a comprehensive 280-run victory in Chennai, giving Rohit Sharma’s team a 1-0 lead in the series.
India’s victory in Chennai was expected, with the only question being how quickly Rohit’s team could seal it on Sunday. Shakib, unbeaten overnight, and Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto attempted to play cautiously during the first hour. However, after the drinks break, Bangladesh’s batting lineup collapsed on the turning pitch of Chepauk. Although they managed to survive the early pace of Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj, Bangladesh's batters couldn’t handle the spin of Ashwin and Jadeja. Despite Shanto holding his ground, none of his teammates, except Shakib, could offer any support in the first hour.
Shakib's departure for 25, caught by Yashasvi Jaiswal off Ashwin’s bowling, marked the beginning of Bangladesh’s downfall. Shanto’s fighting innings of 82 couldn’t prolong the Test any further. His knock included 8 boundaries and 3 sixes off 127 balls. Bangladesh’s last four batters fell cheaply, with Liton Das (1), Mehidy Hasan Miraz (8), Taskin Ahmed (5), and Hasan Mahmud (7) all failing to make an impact. India’s bowlers dominated, with Ashwin taking 6 wickets for 88 runs. The experienced all-rounder, having scored a century earlier in the match, also claimed five wickets in the innings, earning him the Player of the Match award for his outstanding all-round performance. This was the 10th time Ashwin had won the award in Test cricket. Jadeja contributed with 3 wickets for 58 runs, while Bumrah chipped in with 1 wicket for 24 runs.
Bangladesh, who had performed impressively during their Pakistan tour, couldn’t replicate their form on Chennai’s pitch. The visiting team’s batting performance fell short of expectations, although their pacers did find some success. However, Bangladesh’s batting failures made the task easier for Rohit’s men. India’s dominance over Bangladesh continued, with this being their 12th win in 14 Tests against them.
India’s victory in the Chennai Test also set a new milestone. For the first time, India’s Test victories (179) surpassed their losses (178) in the format’s history. India, having played Test cricket since 1932, reached this milestone after 580 matches, with 222 matches ending in a draw and one tied Test against Australia.
India continues to lead the World Test Championship standings, having won 7 out of 10 matches, lost 2, and drawn 1. With 86 points and a win percentage of 71.67%, India remains in a strong position to qualify for the final. Australia is in second place, having won 8 of their 12 matches, with 3 losses and 1 draw, earning 90 points and a win percentage of 62.50%. New Zealand sits in third place, with 3 wins and 3 losses from their 6 matches, and a win percentage of 50%.
