Sri Lanka lead by 202 runs after gripping 3 days vs New Zealand in 1st test

 


The 1st test between hosts Sri Lanka and New Zealand is very excitingly poised .Both teams had their moments after 3 days of intense test cricket at Galle and currently the hosts are 202 runs ahead with 6 wickets in hand. 


The test started with Sri Lanka batting first and losing early wickets on day one till Kamindu Mendis and Kusal Mendis had a fruitful partnership. There were token contributions from  Nissanka (27) who looked in fine touch , Chandimal (30) and Mathews (36) but the real big partnership came from the prolific Kamindu Mendis who gets another test 100 having played another stellar knock and thus continuing his England success while Kusal Mendis (50) played a fine knock . Finally Sri Lanka were bowled out for 305  early on day 2. For the kiwis young quick William O Rourke took 5 wickets after bowling with fire . 



New Zealand started their innings losing Conway (17) cheaply . However Williamson showed his prowess and batted well for his 55 before getting out while Latham showed his mettle again in Asia conditions scoring a sublime 70 . Ravindra (39),  Blundel ( 25) made significant contributions but it was Daryl Mitchell (57) and Glenn Phillips (49) who batted superbly   and played exciting shots before their dismisals signalled the end of New Zealand  1st innings at 340 .  

For Sri lanka  Prabhat Jayasurya took 4 wickets while Ramesh Mendis took 3 wickets 

 O'Rourke jolted Sri Lanka  early in the 2nd inings as Nissanka was out to a superb delivery edging to slip with Sri Lanka already 35 behind on 1st innings . However  Karunaratne and Chandimal had a superb partnership of 147 runs that may prove to be a match winning one . Karunaratne (83) fell short of a 100 while Chandimal (61) got out to a leg side trap . Kamindu Mendis (13) had a rare failure but the old war horse Angelo Mathews (34) and the talented  Dhananjay D Silva (34) batted superbly till close and were unconquered at the end of day 3 as Sri Lanka scored 237/4 , a lead of 202 .
