Sri Lanka completed innings win in 2nd test & beat New Zealand 2-0 in test series
Sri Lanka has won the second match of the Test series against New Zealand. In the second innings of the Test match held in Galle, New Zealand's batsmen put up a tough fight. Despite this, Sri Lanka secured a commanding victory by an innings and 154 runs. After posting a massive first-innings score of 602, Sri Lanka bowled out New Zealand for just 88 runs. In the second innings, New Zealand managed 360 runs, but it wasn’t enough to avoid an innings defeat. With this win, Sri Lanka completed a clean sweep in the two-match series.
Early on day 4 Tom Blundel (60) after getting his 50 got out lbw trying to reverse sweep debutant Peiris . Phillips & Santner got into a scintillating stand of 64 as both played sparkling shots knowing fully well the fate of the match . After a fighting 78 Phillips departed dismissed by Peiris who subsequently dissmissed a strokeful Santner for 67 . The tail wagged as Ajaz Patel scored 22 and made Sri Lanka to fight for their wickets . Finally New Zealand were dusmissed for 360 and thus losing by a humungous margin of an innings and 154 runs . Nishan Peiris took 6 wickets in the 2nd innings while Jayasurya took 3 wickets . Both the above spinners got a match haul of 9 wickets . Kamindu Mendis was the player of the match and Prabhat Jayasurya was the player of the series.
The Sri Lankan team has been showing remarkable consistency in recent times. Ever since former opener and legendary left-handed batsman Sanath Jayasuriya took over as the team’s coach, Sri Lanka’s performance has been outstanding. During this period, they defeated India in an ODI series, followed by a Test victory over England on their home soil, and now, a Test series win against New Zealand.
In the latest match, Kamindu Mendis was awarded the 'Player of the Match' for his brilliant 182-run knock in the first innings. Additionally, left-arm spinner Prabath Jayasuriya was named 'Player of the Series'. Just as Sanath Jayasuriya set new standards in world cricket during his playing days, his coaching is now marking the beginning of a new era for Sri Lankan cricket. The Sri Lanka Cricket Board has extended his contract for another year.
Following this victory, the Sri Lankan cricket team has climbed to third place in the World Test Championship standings with a 55.56 PCT. India leads the table with a 71.67 PCT, followed by Australia in second place with a 62.50 PCT. India has participated in both World Test Championship finals held so far.
