India wins Asian Champions hockey for 5th time beating China 1-0
India clinched the Asian Champions Trophy in hockey with a 1-0 victory over China in the final on Tuesday, led by Harmanpreet Singh. This hard-fought win marks India's fifth title in the tournament, with Harmanpreet earning the accolade of best player.
China, competing in their first final after defeating Pakistan in the semifinals, came in with confidence and focused on a strong defensive strategy. They effectively contained Indian players in the circle, preventing clear shot opportunities. Both teams remained scoreless until the 51st minute, when Jujhar Singh scored the decisive goal for India.
From the outset, India displayed aggression, but China's formidable defense thwarted their attempts. Despite holding 84% possession in the first two quarters, India struggled to capitalize on opportunities, with captain Harmanpreet missing several penalty corners.
As chances went begging, pressure mounted on the Indian side, particularly after they failed to score through the third quarter. In the fourth quarter, India increased their attacking efforts, while China retreated into a defensive formation, hoping to force a penalty shootout, a strategy that had previously worked against Pakistan.
Despite the missed opportunities, players like Jarmanpreet Singh and Gurjot Singh continued to push forward. While China controlled much of the second half, India’s defense remained alert, with goalkeeper Kishan Pathan making key saves. India was awarded a penalty stroke in the 27th minute due to a foul by the Chinese goalkeeper on Manpreet Singh, but the call was overturned after a video review. Pakistan secured third place by defeating South Korea 5-2.
