Sri Lanka beat New Zealand to go one up in the test series, Jayasurya gets match haul of 9 wkts
As expected with only 2 wickets standing , New Zealand failed to produce any miracle & thus expectedly lost the first test to Sri Lanka by some distance. With this defeat New Zealand 's chances of qualifying for the WTC final gets further dented. Sri Lanka on the other hand has won their 2nd consecutive test after winning at the Oval vs England over a week back.
The writing was on the wall. On the fifth day, New Zealand needed 68 runs to win, but they only had 2 wickets remaining. On a Sri Lankan pitch, scoring 68 runs with just 2 wickets in hand on the final day was nearly impossible for them. That’s exactly what happened. New Zealand lost by 63 runs, giving Sri Lanka the lead in the two-match Test series.
New Zealand’s only hope was Rachin Ravindra, who was unbeaten at the end of the fourth day, batting on 92. However, even for him, scoring the required 68 runs was a tough task. That proved true. Sri Lanka took just 22 balls on the fifth morning to claim the remaining 2 wickets. Ravindra was dismissed for 82, caught off Prabath Jayasuriya's bowling. Jayasuriya also took the last wicket of New Zealand, finishing with 5 wickets in the second innings and 9 wickets in the match, earning him the Player of the Match award.
Sri Lanka had posted 305 runs in the first innings, with Kamindu Mendis scoring 114 and Kusal Mendis adding 50. For New Zealand, William O'Rourke took 5 wickets. In reply, New Zealand scored 340 in their first innings, with Tom Latham (70), Kane Williamson (55), and Daryl Mitchell (57) making half-centuries, while Glenn Phillips contributed 49.
Trailing by 35 runs, Sri Lanka scored 309 in their second innings, with half-centuries from Dimuth Karunaratne (83), Dinesh Chandimal (61), and Angelo Mathews (50). Ajaz Patel took 6 wickets for New Zealand. Chasing a target of 275, New Zealand’s batters, apart from Ravindra, struggled, and they were bowled out for 211, resulting in a 63-run loss for Williamson’s side.
