Wolvaardt’s Masterclass Powers South Africa Women to Series-Sealing Win Over India

The India women's national cricket team suffered a third consecutive setback at the Wanderers on Wednesday, as South Africa women's national cricket team cruised to a dominant nine-wicket victory, sealing an unassailable 3-0 lead in the five-match T20I series.

India posted an imposing 192/4 in Johannesburg, built on commanding half-centuries from Harmanpreet Kaur (66 off 38) and Shafali Verma (64 off 46). However, their efforts were overshadowed by a breathtaking innings from South African skipper Laura Wolvaardt, who smashed a scintillating 115 off just 53 deliveries. She was ably supported by Sune Luus, whose unbeaten 62 off 42 balls ensured a comfortable chase.

Pursuing a challenging 193, South Africa got off to a flying start, with Wolvaardt dismantling the Indian bowling attack with remarkable authority. She stormed to a 23-ball half-century—the fastest by a South African woman in T20Is—guiding her side to a commanding 72/0 at the end of the powerplay.

The momentum never dipped as Luus joined the onslaught. The duo stitched together a formidable 100-run opening stand inside nine overs, marking their second consecutive century partnership in the series. Wolvaardt continued her aggressive strokeplay, peppering the boundary with precision to reach a magnificent century in just 47 balls.

This knock marked her 17th international hundred, drawing her level with Meg Lanning and Smriti Mandhana for the most centuries in women’s international cricket. Although she departed in the 16th over, the result was already beyond doubt, with Luus sealing the win in emphatic fashion shortly after.

Earlier, India made a brisk start after being put in to bat, with Mandhana and Shafali adding 51 runs in the powerplay. Mandhana looked particularly fluent during her 37 off 25 balls before falling in the ninth over, followed immediately by the dismissal of Jemimah Rodrigues.

Harmanpreet then anchored the innings alongside Shafali, the pair adding a vital 73-run partnership. After Shafali’s departure, Harmanpreet took charge, accelerating in the death overs with confident strokeplay. Supported by Richa Ghosh, she brought up her half-century and finished strongly, although she was run out off the final delivery.

Her innings also saw her become the highest-scoring captain in women’s T20Is, surpassing 3000 runs in the format as India’s leader.

India will look to regroup when the two sides meet again at the Wanderers in Johannesburg for the fourth T20I on Saturday.
