IPL2026 : SRH Outclass KKR by 65 Runs as Nitish Reddy Shines, KKR loses 2 in a row
There was no respite for Ajinkya Rahane’s Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens, as their struggles continued at home. After losing despite posting 220 in their opening game, KKR failed once again to capitalize on home advantage. Chasing a daunting target of 227 set by Sunrisers Hyderabad, the hosts were bundled out for just 161, slumping to their second consecutive defeat.
KKR’s chase began on a fiery note, with Finn Allen smashing 24 runs in the very first over. However, the New Zealand batter couldn’t convert the start into a big innings, departing for a quickfire 27 off just 8 balls courtesy of a stunning catch by Harsh Dubey. Despite crossing 50 within four overs, skipper Ajinkya Rahane struggled to make an impact, scoring only 8 off 10 balls.
The turning point came with a bizarre run-out involving Cameron Green. The Australian all-rounder, who neither bowled nor contributed with the bat, was dismissed in a mix-up after a deflection off Ishan Malinga’s foot. Although Angkrish Raghuvanshi initially seemed to be the one walking back, replays confirmed that the batters hadn’t crossed, resulting in Green’s dismissal.
Even after losing three wickets, KKR stayed in the contest, bringing up 100 in the ninth over. Wicketkeeper-batter Angkrish Raghuvanshi continued his fine form, reaching a 27-ball fifty. However, another costly mix-up led to his run-out, this time involving Rinku Singh. Those two run-outs effectively derailed KKR’s chase. Anukul Roy failed to deliver as well, falling for a duck to Nitish Kumar Reddy.
Rinku Singh tried to steady the innings but couldn’t replicate his usual finishing prowess. The left-hander managed 35 off 25 balls at a modest strike rate of 140 before being dismissed by Nitish Reddy. Sunil Narine briefly entertained with a couple of sixes but was quickly sent back by Malinga. The rest of the batting lineup crumbled, as KKR were bowled out for 161, suffering a heavy 65-run defeat at home.
KKR’s shortcomings were glaring. Captain Rahane’s strike rate of 80 was far from ideal in a steep chase. Varun Chakravarthy’s dip in form remains a concern, while Cameron Green’s role in the side is increasingly being questioned. From a promising 120/3, KKR’s collapse highlights the need for serious introspection if they are to turn their campaign around.
Earlier, Sunrisers Hyderabad got off to an explosive start with Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma taking the attack to the bowlers. Head scored 46 off 21 balls, while Abhishek smashed 48 off 21 in a blistering display. A crucial 82-run partnership between Heinrich Klaasen and Nitish Reddy powered SRH further, with Reddy contributing 39 off 24 balls. Klaasen then anchored the innings with a well-paced half-century off 34 balls, guiding SRH to a formidable total of 226/8.
In response, KKR never quite recovered from their mid-innings collapse, falling well short at 161 and extending their wait for a first win of the season.
