FIFA World Cup: Flashback 1938 Edition: Italy win back to back titles

The 1938 FIFA World Cup was the third edition of the tournament, held in France from June 4 to June 19, 1938. This tournament holds a somber place in history as it was the final World Cup held before the suspension of the competition due to the outbreak of World War II; the tournament would not return for another 12 years (until 1950).

It was a tournament marked by political tension—notably the Anschluss (the annexation of Austria by Nazi Germany), which resulted in the Austrian team being withdrawn despite having qualified. Furthermore, controversy surrounding the selection of a European host for the second consecutive time led to boycotts by several South American nations, including Argentina and Uruguay.

Italy, under the guidance of manager Vittorio Pozzo, successfully defended their 1934 title, becoming the first nation to win consecutive World Cups.

Tournament Summary

Number of Teams: While 16 teams were originally scheduled to participate, only 15 teams competed. Austria had qualified, but following the Anschluss (the annexation of Austria by Nazi Germany) in March 1938, the Austrian team was dissolved, and their scheduled opponent, Sweden, received a walkover directly into the quarter-finals.

Format: The 1938 tournament maintained a straight knockout format (single elimination) from the Round of 16 through to the final. There were no group stages in this tournament. If a match ended in a draw after 90 minutes, 30 minutes of extra time were played. If the score remained tied after extra time, a replay was held on a later date

Quarter-Finals

The quarter-finals saw intense competition, including a rare replay required between Brazil and Czechoslovakia.

Italy defeated France (3–1): The defending champions ended the host nation's hopes in front of their home crowd.

Hungary defeated Switzerland (2–0): Hungary maintained their clinical form, moving comfortably into the next round.

Sweden defeated Cuba (8–0): In one of the most lopsided matches of the tournament, the Swedes dominated the tournament debutants.

Brazil defeated Czechoslovakia (1–1 AET, Replay 2–1): After a grueling draw, Brazil edged out the Czechs in the replay to secure a semi-final spot.

Semi-Finals

Hungary defeated Sweden (5–1): Hungary produced a commanding attacking display to reach the final.

Italy defeated Brazil (2–1): A classic clash in football history. Brazil, missing their star striker Leônidas due to injury, could not overcome the tactical discipline of the Italian side.

The Final

Held on June 19, 1938, at the Stade Olympique de Colombes, the final pitted the attacking prowess of Hungary against the disciplined, balanced Italian squad.

Result: Italy 4–2 Hungary.

Italy took an early lead, and despite a quick equalizer from Hungary, the Italians asserted control to lead 3–1 at halftime. Hungary could not mount a significant comeback, and Italy secured their second consecutive world title.

Highest Scorer

The Golden Boot of the 1938 tournament was awarded to the legendary Brazilian forward Leônidas da Silva, who scored 7 goals. He famously played a significant role in Brazil's third-place finish, cementing his legacy as one of the standout players of the era.
