Vengsarkar played a crucial role in India’s rise as a competitive Test side, especially in English conditions, and was one of the most dependable middle-order batsmen of his era.

Dilip Balwant Vengsarkar was born on 6 April 1956 in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. Growing up in the cradle of Indian cricket, he developed his game through the strong domestic structure in Mumbai. His talent was evident early, and he quickly progressed through the ranks to represent India at the international level.

Style of Play

Vengsarkar was a right-handed batsman known for his classical technique and graceful stroke play. He excelled particularly on fast and bouncy pitches, where his balance and timing stood out. Dilip Vengsarkar had an outstanding Test career. He played 116 Test matches, scoring 6,868 runs at an average of around 42, including 17 centuries and 35 half-centuries. His highest score in Tests was 166. He was known for performing in challenging conditions and against strong bowling attacks, which adds great value to his record.

ODI Career Record

In One Day Internationals, Vengsarkar played 129 matches, scoring 3,508 runs at an average of around 34, with one century and 23 half-centuries. While not as dominant as in Tests, he was a reliable contributor in the middle order and played important innings in key matches.  Some of his more important knocks were his 3 100s at Lords - A chanceless 103 in 1979 saving India from innings defeat , 157 at Lords in 1982 putting a brave fight to save the test & an elegant 126 * in 1986 at Lords scripting the Test win.  A superbly compiled 102 not out at Leeds in 1986 scripting the series victory on a difficult pitch .   146 not out vs Pakistan at Delhi 1979 almost winning the test in 4th innings.  166 vs Sri Lanka in 1986 at Cuttack on a dreadful pitch. 

First-Class Record

Vengsarkar enjoyed a prolific first-class career, playing 260 matches and scoring 17868 runs at an impressive average of 52.86 . He scored 55 centuries in first-class cricket, reflecting his consistency and longevity at the domestic level, particularly for Mumbai.

Legacy

Dilip Vengsarkar’s legacy is defined by class, consistency and courage, especially in overseas conditions. He was one of the first Indian batsmen to consistently succeed in England and against high-quality pace attacks.
