IPL2026 : Rajasthan Royals Chase Down 223 in Thrilling Fashion to Hand Punjab Kings First Defeat

Punjab Kings, led by Shreyas Iyer, lost their unbeaten streak in the IPL as Rajasthan Royals pulled off a sensational six-wicket victory at home on Tuesday. Batting first, Punjab posted a formidable 222/4, but Rajasthan responded in style, chasing down the target with ease—finishing at 228/4 in just 19.2 overs.

Chasing a daunting 223, Rajasthan got off to an explosive start, thanks to the fearless strokeplay of young sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi. The 15-year-old prodigy lit up the contest with a blistering 43 off just 16 balls, smashing three boundaries and five towering sixes. At the other end, Yashasvi Jaiswal initially played second fiddle before accelerating brilliantly to a fluent 51 off 27 balls, laced with seven fours and a six.

However, Rajasthan stumbled briefly in the middle overs. Dhruv Jurel struggled to find rhythm, managing only 16 off 20 deliveries, while skipper Riyan Parag couldn’t fully capitalize on his start, scoring 29 off 16 balls with a couple of fours and sixes.

Just when pressure began to mount, the dynamic duo of Donovan Ferreira and impact substitute Shubham Dubey turned the game on its head. Their breathtaking partnership completely dismantled Punjab’s bowling attack. Ferreira remained unbeaten on a scintillating 52 off 26 balls (6 fours, 3 sixes), while Dubey played a fiery cameo of 31* off just 12 deliveries. Together, they stitched an unbeaten 77-run stand off only 32 balls for the fifth wicket, sealing a memorable win.

Among Punjab’s bowlers, Yuzvendra Chahal stood out with figures of 3/36, but lacked support from the other end. Arshdeep Singh endured a tough outing, conceding 68 runs in his four overs. Lockie Ferguson (57 runs) and Marco Jansen (41 runs) were also expensive, while Harpreet Brar impressed with a tidy spell of 4-0-25-0.

Earlier, Punjab rode on a late onslaught from Marcus Stoinis, whose explosive unbeaten 62 off just 22 balls powered them to a commanding total. After Rajasthan captain Parag opted to field first, Punjab’s openers provided a brisk start. Priyansh Arya scored a quickfire 29 off 11 balls, while Prabhsimran Singh anchored the innings with a well-crafted 59 off 44 deliveries.

Cooper Connolly added valuable momentum with a punchy 30 off 14 balls, but Iyer couldn’t quite accelerate at the death, managing 30 off 27. It was Stoinis’ breathtaking power-hitting—featuring four fours and six sixes—that lifted Punjab to a competitive total in the closing overs.

For Rajasthan, Yash Raj Paanja picked up two wickets, while Jofra Archer and Nandre Burger claimed one each. Ravindra Jadeja was economical but wicketless, conceding just 32 runs in his four overs.

In the end, Rajasthan’s fearless batting display and clinical finishing proved too strong, as they scripted a remarkable chase and handed Punjab Kings a stinging defeat.
