Ipl2026: Parag’s Bold Call Pays Off as Rajasthan Royals Edge Gujarat Titans in Last-Over Thriller
In a refreshing break from convention, Riyan Parag chose to bat first after winning the toss against Gujarat Titans on Saturday—defying the popular trend of chasing. For most of the match, that decision seemed questionable, but a dramatic turnaround in the final two overs sealed a thrilling six-run victory for Rajasthan Royals.
With Gujarat needing 15 runs off the last 12 balls, the game hung in the balance. However, exceptional death bowling from Jofra Archer and Tushar Deshpande, who conceded just four runs each in the final two overs, swung the match decisively in Rajasthan’s favour. Parag’s tactical gamble ultimately earned widespread praise.
Earlier, powered by fluent knocks from Yashasvi Jaiswal and Dhruv Jurel, Rajasthan posted a formidable 210/6. Gujarat fought hard but fell just short at 204/8, marking only the second instance this season where a team batting first emerged victorious.
Gujarat were dealt a major blow before the match as regular captain Shubman Gill missed out due to a muscle strain. In his absence, Rashid Khan led the side and handed a debut to Kumar Kushagra, who opened the innings but managed only a modest 18 off 14 balls. It was Sai Sudharsan who played a glorious innings of 73 with sparkling shots all around the ground as Titans was marching serenely towards the target with Buttler looking good too.
The Titans’ innings lost momentum rapidly after Buttler’s (26) dismissal, collapsing from a stable position to 133/5 with three wickets falling in quick succession. Rahul Tewatia and Shahrukh Khan couldn’t make an impact, while Ravi Bishnoi starred with the ball, claiming an impressive 4/41. Gujarat lost 5/34 in a stunning collapse.
Just when Gujarat seemed out of the contest, a spirited counterattack from Rashid (24) and Kagiso Rabada (23*), both primarily bowlers, reignited hopes. Their aggressive partnership put Rajasthan’s bowlers under immense pressure, bringing the equation within reach and setting up a nail-biting finish.
But the decisive moment came in the 19th over, where Archer’s brilliance ensured not a single boundary was conceded—a first in Rajasthan’s innings. Deshpande followed it up with a superb final over, executing six pinpoint yorkers. Rashid fell attempting a big shot on the fifth ball, and with six needed off the last delivery, Ashok Sharma failed to make contact, denying Gujarat a Super Over.
Rajasthan’s innings had earlier begun on a promising note, with young sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi playing fearlessly. He struck early boundaries off Mohammed Siraj and Rabada, and even survived a dropped catch by Buttler. The 15-year-old impressed with a brisk 31 off 18 balls before being dismissed by Rashid, who was well supported by a catch from Glenn Phillips.
The momentum continued as Jaiswal registered his first half-century of the season, scoring an elegant 55 off 36 balls. Parag had a rare failure with just 8, but Jurel took charge with a sensational 75 off 42 balls, smashing five fours and five sixes. Shimron Hetmyer (18) provided a handy cameo, while Ravindra Jadeja consumed a few deliveries towards the end, slightly slowing the scoring rate.
In the end, those extra runs proved crucial, as Rajasthan held their nerve in a pulsating finish to secure a memorable victory.
