Ipl2026: Punjab Kings Dominate CSK in High-Scoring Thriller; Iyer’s Fifty Seals Clinical Chase

MS Dhoni is yet to take the field, and it almost feels as if Chennai Super Kings have vowed not to return to winning ways without their talisman. For the second consecutive match, CSK ended on the losing side—this time despite posting a formidable 209 on the board. In contrast, Punjab Kings are riding high, having now toppled two heavyweights—Gujarat and Chennai—early in the tournament. While it’s a long league, this emphatic start will undoubtedly fuel Punjab’s momentum, even as pressure mounts on Dhoni’s men.

Opting to field first after winning the toss, Punjab skipper Shreyas Iyer’s decision saw early success as Sanju Samson departed cheaply. However, CSK recovered strongly. They raced to 57 in the powerplay, with Ayush Mhatre launching a blistering counterattack alongside Ruturaj Gaikwad (28). Mhatre dazzled with a fluent 73 off 43 balls, smashing six fours and five sixes. Despite being dropped by Shashank, he couldn’t fully capitalize on the reprieve.

Late fireworks from Shivam Dube (an unbeaten 45) powered CSK past the 200-mark, while Sarfaraz Khan chipped in with a quickfire 32 off just 12 deliveries. Chennai finished on an imposing 209/5. Among the bowlers, Yuzvendra Chahal picked up a wicket for 21 runs in his three overs, while Vijaykumar claimed two scalps.

Punjab’s response was nothing short of explosive. Priyansh Arya set the tone instantly, hammering a boundary off the first ball and following it up with a six. He blazed his way to 39 off just 11 balls before being bowled, by which time Punjab had already surged to 61 in just 4.2 overs.

Prabhsimran Singh contributed a brisk 43 but fell to a mix-up resulting in a run-out. Yet, the scoring rate never dipped. Cooper Connolly added a valuable 36 before departing, with Punjab reaching 143/3 after 13 overs.

At the heart of the chase was captain Shreyas Iyer, whose composed and authoritative innings ensured there were no stumbles. He struck a crucial half-century (50), decorated with three sixes and four boundaries, before edging one outside off stump. Nehal Wadhera also departed later, but by then the result was all but decided.

Punjab Kings comfortably chased down the target with eight balls to spare, underlining their dominance in a thrilling yet one-sided contest.
