IPL2026 : Catch Drops Cost Dear as SRH beat Rajasthan despite Vaibhav's 103
Sunday in the Indian Premier League turned into a spectacle of missed chances, where dropped catches proved decisive across two high-scoring encounters. In the afternoon clash, KL Rahul made the most of two reprieves to hammer a magnificent 152, while in the second innings, Shreyas Iyer was also dropped twice—mistakes that ultimately cost Delhi Capitals the match despite posting a massive 264.
The trend continued in the evening fixture, where another dropped catch proved pivotal. Vaibhav Suryavanshi was given a lifeline early in his innings—and he made it count in emphatic fashion, smashing a breathtaking century off just 36 balls. Yet, his brilliance went in vain as Rajasthan Royals failed to defend 228. Sunrisers Hyderabad chased down 229 with nine balls to spare, capitalizing on Rajasthan’s costly fielding lapses.
Playing their first game of the season in Jaipur, Rajasthan Royals posted an imposing 228/6 in 20 overs. Vaibhav led the charge with a sensational 101, while Dhruv Jurel contributed a fluent 51. However, their efforts were overshadowed by Hyderabad’s clinical chase, powered by Abhishek Sharma (57) and Ishan Kishan (74).
Vaibhav’s innings could have ended early when he miscued a big shot off Lasith Malinga at 34, only for the catch to be spilled by Aniket Verma near the boundary. Making full use of that reprieve, Vaibhav turned destructive, reaching his fifty in just 15 balls with a six. It marked his third fifty-plus score of the season—each coming in just 15 deliveries. Unlike previous outings, he carried on this time, racing to a century in 36 balls with a six, celebrating in style to signal his intent.
His blistering knock eventually ended at 103 off 37 balls, featuring five fours and a staggering 12 sixes, when he missed a reverse scoop and was trapped LBW. Having scored his maiden IPL century last year against Gujarat Titans in 35 balls, Vaibhav once again underlined why he is widely regarded as a future star.
Rajasthan’s innings also saw a valuable 112-run partnership between Vaibhav and Jurel, who scored 51 off 35 balls. However, contributions from others were limited. Yashasvi Jaiswal managed just 10, while captain Riyan Parag fell cheaply for 7 to Pat Cummins. Donovan Ferreira added a quick 33 off 16 balls, but a flurry of late wickets prevented Rajasthan from crossing the 250-mark they once looked set for.
Chasing 229, Hyderabad had an early scare when Travis Head survived a first-ball chance, dropped behind the stumps by Jurel. He eventually fell for 6, but not before Rajasthan paid the price for the missed opportunity. Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan then launched a counterattack, refusing to let the momentum slip.
Even during their partnership, Rajasthan continued to falter in the field. Abhishek was dropped at third man, while a simple chance was put down by Ravindra Jadeja at point—misses that proved costly. The duo stitched together a rapid 132-run stand off just 55 balls, putting Hyderabad firmly in control.
Although Jofra Archer struck to remove both set batters—Abhishek for 57 off 29 balls and Ishan for 74 off 31—the damage had already been done. Further lapses in the field, including a dropped catch of Heinrich Klaasen, ensured Rajasthan never regained control. Klaasen (29*) finished the game with an explosive Nitish Kr Reddy who scored a breezy 18 ball 36 not out .
In the end, Hyderabad completed the chase comfortably, exposing Rajasthan’s sloppy fielding. The match served as a stark reminder: in T20 cricket, dropped catches often prove more costly than anything else. Rajasthan Royals were left to rue their missed chances as they suffered defeat on home soil.
