IPL2026 : Sunrisers Hyderabad Hold Nerve to Edge Chennai Super Kings in Thrilling Contest
Chennai Super Kings failed to convert their hopes into a winning streak after a hat-trick of losses, going down by 10 runs to Sunrisers Hyderabad in a gripping encounter on Saturday. Despite a commendable effort from the bowlers, CSK’s batting frailties proved costly. Half-centuries from Abhishek Sharma and Heinrich Klaasen powered Hyderabad to a competitive total, ultimately sealing the game on home turf. SRH posted 194/9, while Chennai fell short at 184/8.
Asked to bat first, Hyderabad got off to a brisk and confident start. Openers Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head looked in sublime touch, racing to 23 runs in the first three overs. However, the game took a dramatic turn with Anshul Kamboj and Matthew Short conceding 15 and 25 runs respectively in successive overs. Abhishek was particularly aggressive, smashing three fours and two sixes in Short’s over and bringing up a blistering half-century in just 15 balls.
Mukesh Choudhary’s sixth over proved to be a turning point. Despite conceding three boundaries, he struck twice in the final two deliveries, dismissing Head (23) and Ishan Kishan (0), reducing SRH from a dominant 75/0 to 75/2. The situation worsened for Hyderabad when Abhishek departed after a scintillating 59 off 22 balls, studded with six fours and four sixes.
At a crucial juncture, Heinrich Klaasen anchored the innings with a composed and calculated knock. Avoiding unnecessary risks, he played elegant cricketing shots to score 59 off 39 balls. His innings was pivotal, as SRH looked set for a much bigger total at one stage, potentially crossing 220. Credit must go to the Chennai bowlers, especially Kamboj, whose disciplined yorkers outside off stump proved effective. He finished with impressive figures of 3 for 22 in three overs, including the key wicket of Klaasen. Jamie Overton (3/37) also chipped in with three wickets, while Noor Ahmad maintained tight control (0/33).
Chasing 195, Chennai suffered an early setback with the dismissal of Sanju Samson (7). However, Ayush Mhatre and Ruturaj Gaikwad kept the scoreboard ticking, racing to 60 in just four overs. The momentum dipped after Mhatre’s dismissal for a quickfire 30, and Eshan Malinga soon removed Gaikwad (19) to tighten SRH’s grip.
Matthew Short and Sarfaraz Khan attempted to stabilize the innings, but regular wickets hampered Chennai’s progress. With the required rate climbing steadily, both batters tried to accelerate, only to fall in quick succession—thanks again to Malinga’s crucial breakthroughs.
Dewald Brevis (0) failed to make an impact, and with Chennai reeling at 148/6, the onus fell on Shivam Dube (21). His dismissal effectively ended CSK’s hopes, as the lower order couldn’t bridge the gap. Hyderabad’s bowlers held their nerve in the closing stages, despite an expensive outing from Prafull Hinge (1/60 in 4 overs). Sakib Hussain contributed with a tidy spell of 1/32. Malinga with 3/29 was the prime bowler & won the player of the match.
In the end, it was a well-fought contest where Sunrisers Hyderabad displayed greater composure under pressure, securing a hard-earned 10-run victory.
