IPL2026: RCB Outclass Mumbai Indians in Run-Fest; Injury Scare for Rohit and Kohli
“Mumbai-cha Raja” vs “King.” Rohit vs Kohli. It felt less like a clash between teams and more like a battle between two modern greats—Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Though both have stepped away from international T20s, their ability to dominate remains unquestioned. However, at the Wankhede, Rohit couldn’t carry Mumbai to victory as Mumbai Indians went down by 18 runs to Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
It was a near-perfect performance from RCB in all departments. Powered by explosive knocks from Phil Salt and Rajat Patidar, Bengaluru piled up a massive 240. In response, Hardik Pandya’s Mumbai could only manage 222.
Despite scoring a half-century, Kohli struggled with his strike rate. But more worrying than form was fitness—both Rohit and Kohli left the field with injuries. Rohit suffered a hamstring issue and couldn’t bat freely, while Kohli remained off the field during parts of the second innings due to an ankle concern. The extent of their injuries remains unclear.
Mumbai’s decision at the toss backfired badly. Opting to bowl first, Hardik perhaps didn’t anticipate the storm that followed. Salt led the charge with a blistering 78 off just 36 balls, smashing six fours and six sixes before falling to Shardul Thakur. By then, RCB had already raced to 120 in just 10.5 overs.
Kohli took 38 balls to reach his 50 and looked visibly frustrated upon dismissal, even throwing his helmet and gloves. Meanwhile, skipper Patidar once again delivered with a stunning strike rate of 265, scoring 50 off just 20 balls, including four fours and five sixes before being dismissed by Mitchell Santner. A late cameo from Tim David (34 off 16) pushed RCB to a record 240—the highest total at Wankhede in IPL history.
Mumbai’s chase never quite found full rhythm despite flashes of brilliance. Ryan Rickelton looked promising with a quick 37, but Rohit’s early injury disrupted momentum. Tilak Varma continued his poor run, while a strong counterattack from Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik briefly revived hopes.
RCB’s bowling and captaincy stood out. Patidar rotated his bowlers smartly, with Suyash Sharma striking at crucial moments. Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Rasikh Salam Dar provided support, while Krunal Pandya kept things tight with clever variations. Jacob Duffy eventually sealed the game by dismissing Hardik at a crucial juncture.
After Hardik’s departure, the chase fizzled out despite a valiant 71 from Sherfane Rutherford. The target proved too steep in the end.
With this win, RCB bounced back strongly and climbed to third on the points table with six points from four matches. Mumbai, meanwhile, slipped further, managing just two points and sitting in eighth place.
Concerns continue to mount for Mumbai—not just due to results, but also the form of Jasprit Bumrah, who has gone wicketless in four matches, possibly for the first time in his IPL career. Questions are also being raised about his utilization, as he was surprisingly underused even when RCB batters were dominating.
For now, RCB celebrate a statement win. But for both teams, the fitness of their biggest stars—Rohit and Kohli—remains the biggest talking point.
