IPL2026 : Mumbai Indians’ Misery Deepens as SRH Pull Off Stunning Chase of 243
Mumbai Indians’ struggles show no signs of easing. For much of the season, Hardik Pandya’s men have faltered collectively across batting, bowling, and fielding. This time, even when one department delivered, the other let them down badly. On Wednesday, despite a magnificent batting performance, MI’s bowlers collapsed under pressure, resulting in a crushing six-wicket defeat with eight balls to spare—even after posting a formidable 243.
After winning the toss at the Wankhede Stadium, Hardik Pandya opted to bat first—and the decision seemed spot on early in the innings. Mumbai got off to a blazing start, with the opening partnership racing to 93 runs. Will Jacks playing his 1st match of the season contributed a brisk 46, while Ryan Rickelton produced a sensational knock of 123 off just 55 balls. His innings was not only breathtaking but record-breaking—the highest score by a Mumbai Indians batter in IPL history, and the fastest century for the franchise, brought up in just 44 deliveries. Riding largely on Rickelton’s brilliance, along with Hardik Pandya’s explosive 31 off 15 balls at the death, MI piled up an imposing 243/5 in their 20 overs.
However, what should have been a match-winning total proved insufficient. Mumbai’s bowling unit failed to rise to the occasion, leaking runs heavily and allowing Sunrisers Hyderabad to chase down the mammoth target with surprising ease.
Travis Head who was having a sedate season finally rose to the occasion along with Abhishek Sharma as both launched a fierce assault on the Mumbai bowling as runs flowed in 4s and 6s . They put on a breathtaking 129 run stand in over 8 overs after which Ghazanfar dismised Abhishek (45) and Kishan (0) in successive deliveries to get Mumbai back in the game . Hardik raised further hopes by dismissing a rampaging Head (76 in 30 balls ) . However Heinrich Klaasen looking in dazzling touch abd played another explosive innings with risk free strokes. He played some glorious inside out shots and down the ground shots and even blistering pull shots to snuff out the Mumbai challenge with a 30 ball 65 not out and well supported by Nitish Reddy (21) and Salil (30 not out in just 10 balls) to close the chase effortlessly with 8 balls remaining. Klaasen was player of the match .
This defeat has left Mumbai Indians’ playoff hopes hanging by a thread. With just two wins from eight matches, the five-time champions are now staring at an uphill battle. In contrast, Sunrisers Hyderabad have surged closer to a playoff berth, climbing to third place on the points table with 12 points from nine matches.
