IPL2026 : Rizvi - Stubbs rescue Delhi Capitals from early collapse to beat LSG
Lucknow Super Giants, owned by Sanjiv Goenka, stumbled at the very start of the IPL season despite debuting in a fresh new jersey. They went down by 6 wickets to Delhi Capitals. Batting first, Rishabh Pant’s side managed only 141 runs, which Delhi chased down comfortably in 17.1 overs, finishing at 145/4.
Defending a modest total of 141 in modern T20 cricket is always a challenge. However, Mohammed Shami provided an early breakthrough by dismissing KL Rahul for a duck on the very first ball. The Lucknow bowlers tried to keep the contest alive by removing Pathum Nissanka (1), Nitish Rana (15), and even Delhi skipper Axar Patel (0) cheaply. But with such a low total on the board, their efforts proved insufficient as Lucknow suffered a home defeat.
Chasing 142, Delhi found themselves in deep trouble at 26/4. From there, a match-winning partnership between Sameer Rizvi and Tristan Stubbs turned the game around. The duo stitched together a decisive 119-run stand for the fifth wicket to guide Delhi home. Rizvi remained unbeaten on 70 off 47 balls, hitting 5 fours and 4 sixes, while Stubbs supported him with an unbeaten 39 off 32 balls, including 3 fours and a six.
For Lucknow, Prince Yadav was the most successful bowler with figures of 2 for 20. Mohsin Khan picked up 1 for 19, while Shami claimed 1 for 28. Anrich Nortje and Shahbaz Ahmed failed to make an impact with the ball.
Lucknow’s batting looked far from convincing in their opening match. On a familiar pitch, their batters struggled for rhythm and kept losing wickets at regular intervals, eventually getting bowled out in 18.4 overs. A crucial mistake came early when captain Pant was run out for 7, caught well outside his crease after a deflection off Mukesh Kumar’s foot from a straight drive by Mitchell Marsh.
Following that setback, wickets continued to tumble. Aiden Markram (11), Ayush Badoni (0), and Nicholas Pooran (8) failed to contribute significantly. Marsh tried to stabilize the innings with 35 off 28 balls (2 fours, 3 sixes), while Abdul Samad provided some resistance with 36 off 25 balls (3 fours, 1 six).
Lower down the order, contributions were minimal. Mukul Choudhary scored 14, while Shahbaz Ahmed remained unbeaten on 15 off 16 balls. The tailenders, including Shami (1), Nortje (0), and Mohsin Khan (0), failed to step up—highlighting the growing need for bowlers to contribute with the bat in modern cricket.
For Delhi, Lungi Ngidi and T Natarajan starred with the ball, picking up 3 wickets each. Kuldeep Yadav claimed 2 for 31, while Axar Patel chipped in with 1 for 17. Mukesh Kumar, though wicketless, bowled an economical spell, conceding just 17 runs in his 3 overs.
