Dominant South Africa women Outclass India to Take 2-0 Lead in WT20I Series
The Indian women’s cricket team suffered a comprehensive eight-wicket defeat against South Africa in the second match of the five-game WT20I series at Kingsmead on Sunday. With this convincing win, the hosts have taken firm control of the series, leading 2-0 after also clinching the opener at the same venue.
India’s innings was anchored by an aggressive 57 off 38 balls from Shafali Verma, who provided early momentum with a flurry of boundaries. However, her efforts proved insufficient as the rest of the batting unit failed to build on the platform. For South Africa, Tumi Sekhukhune (3/31) and Chloe Tryon (3/22) delivered disciplined and impactful spells to restrict India to a below-par total of 147.
In reply, South Africa produced a commanding batting display, led by a brilliant opening partnership between Laura Wolvaardt and Sune Luus. The duo came out with clear intent, launching a relentless assault on the Indian bowlers right from the start. They raced to 66/0 in the powerplay, putting India under immediate pressure.
Maintaining their aggressive approach, the pair took South Africa to 92 without loss at the halfway mark. Wolvaardt, in sublime touch, brought up her second half-century of the series in style, guiding her team past the 100-run mark in the 11th over. Although India managed to break the stand in the 12th over through Shreyanka Patil, dismissing Wolvaardt for a fluent 54 off 34 balls, the outcome was never in doubt.
Luus continued her fine form, scoring a composed 57 off 46 balls, ensuring South Africa cruised to victory with nearly three overs remaining.
Earlier, India had a mixed start after being put in to bat. Despite early setbacks with the dismissals of Smriti Mandhana and Jemimah Rodrigues inside the powerplay, Shafali Verma kept the scoreboard ticking with fearless strokeplay. She dominated the powerplay, contributing 37 of India’s 58 runs.
A steady 53-run partnership between Shafali and Anushka Sharma for the third wicket helped stabilize the innings and raised hopes of a competitive total. However, Anushka’s dismissal in the 13th over triggered a collapse. Shafali, who had reached her fifty in the 10th over, departed soon after, further denting India’s progress.
The middle and lower order failed to capitalize, losing wickets at regular intervals. Captain Harmanpreet Kaur’s run-out in the 18th over summed up India’s struggles, as they were eventually bowled out for 147.
With momentum firmly on their side, South Africa will head into the third match at the Wanderers in Johannesburg on Wednesday brimming with confidence, while India will need a strong comeback to keep the series alive.
