IPL2026: Punjab Kings Script History in Run-Fest Thriller; Rahul’s Heroics Go in Vain

 


In modern T20 cricket, no total ever feels truly safe—especially on a batting-friendly surface like Delhi. Delhi Capitals piled up a mammoth 264 after batting first, a score that would normally seal the game. But what followed was nothing short of extraordinary, as Punjab Kings produced a breathtaking chase to rewrite the record books.

Punjab’s openers came out with fearless intent, unleashing a storm that would put even the fiercest cyclones to shame. Their explosive stroke play laid a formidable foundation, pushing the team into a dominant position early on. Eventually, skipper Shreyas Iyer played a fearless, match-winning knock, scaling what seemed like a ‘Himalayan’ target with remarkable composure. In the end, even KL Rahul’s superhuman century was overshadowed by Punjab’s historic triumph.

Rahul, determined to silence his critics, chose this stage to deliver a masterclass. From the outset, he batted with aggressive intent, maintaining a strike rate well above 150. As the innings progressed, his tempo only intensified. The star opener remained unbeaten on a stunning 152, registering the highest individual score by an Indian in IPL history and clinching the Orange Cap in the process. His innings was studded with records, yet ultimately ended in heartbreak.

Riding on Rahul’s brilliance, Delhi posted the highest team total of the Indian Premier League 2026 season. Nitish Rana provided excellent support with a blistering 91 off 44 balls. Their partnership of 220 runs became the second-highest in IPL history, propelling Delhi to a daunting 264 on home soil.

In response, Punjab Kings launched an electrifying counterattack. Openers Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh went berserk, racing to 116 without loss in the powerplay—the second-highest powerplay score in IPL history. In a sensational over, Prabhsimran hammered six consecutive boundaries off Mukesh Kumar, underlining Punjab’s ruthless intent.

Delhi finally found a breakthrough when captain Axar Patel dismissed Priyansh for a quickfire 43 off 17 balls. Soon after, Kuldeep Yadav removed the dangerous Prabhsimran, who had smashed 76 off just 26 deliveries, including nine fours and five sixes. Cooper Connolly failed to make an impact, scoring only 17.

However, the game turned decisively in Punjab’s favour when Shreyas Iyer took charge. Despite some sloppy fielding from Delhi—highlighted by dropped catches from Karun Nair—Iyer capitalized on his chances. As the saying goes, fortune favours the brave, and Iyer embodied that spirit. He remained unbeaten on a commanding 71 off 36 balls, guiding Punjab to a famous victory.

This high-octane clash witnessed an astonishing 529 runs scored in just 39 overs, making it one of the most explosive matches in IPL history. Punjab Kings chased down the massive target with seven balls to spare, losing only four wickets. In doing so, they set a new record for the highest successful run chase in T20 cricket history—surpassing their own previous record of chasing 262 against Kolkata Knight Riders two years ago.

The match once again proved that in T20 cricket, no target is beyond reach. Punjab Kings’ sensational victory propelled them to the top of the points table, unbeaten and brimming with confidence.
