IPL2026 : Samson’s Stunning Century Revives CSK, Hands Them First Win of the Season

Reeling from a hat-trick of defeats, Chennai Super Kings found a much-needed saviour in the brilliant Sanju Samson. Many had believed that only Mahendra Singh Dhoni could rescue the struggling side, but with the veteran once again unavailable, the spotlight firmly shifted to Samson—and he delivered in emphatic fashion. His breathtaking century powered a low-on-confidence Chennai outfit to a commanding total of 212. In response, Delhi faltered against a fiery spell from Jamie Overton, folding for 189 as CSK clinched their first win of the IPL season after three matches.

Having won the toss, Delhi skipper Axar Patel opted to field— a decision that backfired spectacularly. Although CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad departed early for 15, Samson forged a crucial and electrifying partnership with Ayush Mhatre, injecting life into the MA Chidambaram Stadium. Samson brought up his century in just 61 balls, batting with authority, flair, and a World Cup-like intensity. He remained unbeaten on a sensational 115 off just 56 deliveries, an innings studded with 15 boundaries and four towering sixes. Mhatre contributed a fluent 59 off 36 balls before retiring out, while Shivam Dube added a quickfire 20 off 10 balls to give the innings a powerful finish.

Delhi’s chase began on a promising note, with Pathum Nissanka displaying aggressive intent. KL Rahul, however, struggled to accelerate and was dismissed for 18 by Khaleel Ahmed, who struck again in the same over to remove the Sri Lankan opener after a brisk 41 off 24 balls. The Delhi innings soon lost momentum as wickets tumbled in quick succession—Sameer Rizvi and Axar Patel fell cheaply, with Sarfaraz Khan pulling off a spectacular, Jonty Rhodes-esque catch that lit up the stadium.

David Miller failed to make an impact, falling for 17 to Overton, while Ashutosh Sharma managed 19. Tristan Stubbs waged a lone battle, crafting a resilient 60 off 38 balls, including four fours and three sixes. However, with little support from the other end, his effort ultimately proved insufficient.

Jamie Overton was the standout performer with the ball, claiming an impressive 4 for 18, dismantling Delhi’s batting lineup. Anshul Kamboj chipped in with three wickets, while Khaleel Ahmed, Gurpreet Singh, and Noor Ahmad contributed with one apiece.

Chennai Super Kings, even in the absence of Dhoni, finally opened their account this season. With hopes high for Dhoni’s return, fans will be optimistic about their team gaining further momentum in the matches to come.
