USOpen24 : Alcaraz crashes out in 2nd round in a stunning upset, Medvedev advances

One of the biggest upsets in recent tennis history occurred on Friday morning at the US Open. Third seed Carlos Alcaraz was defeated in the second round by the Netherlands' Botic van de Zandschulp in straight sets. The match ended with scores of 6-1, 7-5, 6-4.

Botic, ranked 74th in the world and unseeded in the US Open, managed to defeat Olympic silver medallist Alcaraz. Alcaraz, who had earlier won the French Open and Wimbledon this year, saw his dream of securing three Grand Slam titles in a single year come to an abrupt end in the second round.

Speaking after his victory in the men's singles match at Arthur Ashe Stadium, Botic said, "I am at a loss for words. It was an incredible night. It was my first time playing at night in this stadium, and the crowd was amazing." In his previous match, Botic had defeated Denis Shapovalov. He added, "That win gave me a lot of confidence. I was fighting from the very first point and knew I had a chance to win this match."

This marks the first time Alcaraz has been knocked out in the second round of a Grand Slam since his defeat at Wimbledon in 2021. Throughout the match, Alcaraz managed to serve only two aces. In the first set, he struggled to compete against the Dutch player. Although he attempted to make a comeback in the second set, he could not overcome his opponent. Botic calmly handled Alcaraz's powerful shots and won 28 out of 35 net points, eventually securing the victory.

Naomi Osaka also faced a loss. The four-time Grand Slam champion was defeated in the second round of the women's singles. The Japanese tennis star, who won the US Open in 2018 and 2020, has seen her ranking drop significantly. After taking a break from tennis due to mental health issues, she has yet to regain her former form. Osaka was defeated by Czech player Karolina Muchova. Although Muchova has yet to win a Grand Slam, she reached the French Open final last year. Osaka lost the match 3-6, 6-7.

In the women's singles, Denmark's Caroline Wozniacki and the USA's Jessica Pegula have advanced to the third round of the US Open. In the men's singles, Daniil Medvedev of Russia has also reached the third round after defeating Hungary's Fabian Marozsan with scores of 6-3, 6-2, 7-6 (7-5).
